ontri.com Newsletter - Volume
3 - December 05, 2004 Welcome to the winter edition of the ontri.com newsletter. 2004 has been a remarkable year for ontri.com and we would like to thank you – our thousands of members – for your tremendous support in helping ontri thrive. Our public clubs are still growing fast and the superstars of the month competitions have heated up each month. Our overall superstar for September burned 42,635 calories in a single month while training for an ironman event. That mark is the current ontri record, so those of you looking for a killer new year’s resolution, try making a run at the title. It took Vince from North Carolina, September’s star, 605+ miles of biking, 122+ miles of running and 15.5 miles of swimming to set the bar at that level…wow! Katie from Texas rocked all of ontri in November, becoming the first woman to win the overall ontri.com competition for any month. She was close to 3,000 calories over the second place finisher so she literally swam, biked and ran away with the title. Way to go Katie! And every month in at least one club someone has sealed the title with a long bike ride, run or swim late in the day on the last day of the month. The competition was developed to add some fun to your training and hopefully to motivate some of you to add an extra mile or two; based on the feedback we get it appears to be working. We’ve also seen a lot of activity on the message boards in the public clubs and are glad that so many of you are willing to share information and help out fellow athletes. Thanks for that and please keep it up!
In addition to the public clubs, we also have dozens of local triathlon clubs, cycling clubs and running clubs that are using ontri as their main club web site, posting events, information and competing in their own private competitions. For those who are members of local clubs or teams, or who are thinking of starting a club or team, we’d welcome you to set up a private club on ontri. It’s free and we’ll help you get up and running in no time. We can even host a branded home page with your team logo. Just send an email to clubs@ontri.com
Ironman inspiration… On October 16, the 2004 Ironman Triathlon World Championship took place in Kona, Hawaii. Over 1700 athletes from around the world competed in this incredible event. As if the 2.4 mile open ocean swim, the 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run wasn’t grueling enough, the athletes this year were up against unusually hot temperatures and high winds. Germany’s Germany’s Normann Stadler and Switzerland’s Natascha Badmann took the men’s and women’s crowns respectively with times of 8:33:29 and 9:50:04. Badmann was awarded the women’s title after Germany’s Nina Craft was stripped of her medal for admitting that she used the banned substance erythropoietin. Watching the winners cross the finish line is always inspiring but I drew even more inspiration from athletes like Sarah Reinertsen of Brooklyn, who is the first female above-the-knee amputee to attempt the Ironman. The heavy winds caused Sarah to miss the bike cut-off by just a few minutes but she promised to come back next year and take care of “unfinished business.” Ryan Sutter completed the Ironman, a life long dream of his, and in the process raised money for fallen firefighters. Everyone who competed had a heartwarming story and ontri.com congratulates all those who even attempt the Ironman distance.

Holiday eating and winter blues… Many of our members have wondered what they should do during the offseason. One recommendation is to get an early spring race in your calendar now so you’ve got something to shoot for. For a lot of us, having a race out there is the best way to stay motivated. Another thing you might consider is adding a weight training program to the mix. According to Michael Silva, MS, PT, CSCS, president of FOUNDATIONperformance, adding a strength program to your workouts will help your swim, bike and run – but only if you train properly. Michael Silva works with many triathletes throughout the year and has published an article on strength training geared specifically for triathletes. The article and information on how to contact Michael can be found at http://www.ontri.com/weighttraining.html.
New Features… We have continued to make improvements to the site and are in the middle of several new developments. We recently added an intermediate marathoners program to go with our first timer program so those looking to break the four hour mark can give that program a try. We received numerous suggestions from many of you for a weight training log and we are working on implementing that now. We’re also working on a way to make it easier to connect with other ontri members. Many of you have come to ontri to meet other athletes and find a club or a training buddy and we will improve that process in early 2005. We wish everyone a great holiday season and look forward to the continued growth of the ontri.com community next year.
Thanks again for your support of ontri.com and please do keep the suggestions and feedback coming. We are listening!
Happy training! |
