ontri.com Newsletter - November 02, 2005

Welcome to the November 2005 edition of the www.ontri.com newsletter.  We've been busy here over the last several months adding a slew of new features to www.ontri.com while at the same time participating in another superb race season.  We had our first snow flurry this past Saturday up here in Boston and since nothing but a 4 mile Thanksgiving day fun run is left in my race calendar, my season is winding down.  For those in warmer climates or those training through winter, keep up the great work but I'll be eating turkey and pie and working on the web site!  My 2005 season included several great moments but one "ontri" moment in particular that I wanted to share.  It happened early in the morning, about 6:30 AM on August 21st, just as I was finishing up my warm up swim for the Timberman Half Ironman.  As I got out of the water I threw on my ontri tee-shirt while I waited for the start of the race.  No sooner had I pulled the shirt over my head did I hear, "hey ontri.com, I love that site, I didn't know they sold tee-shirts!"  It was the first time an ontri member had spotted me in my new ontri shirt and I was so excited I almost forgot about the 1.2 mile swim that loomed ahead.  As ontri grows I hope to have more and more of those moments but the first one is always memorable so thank you!  In any case, we do sell very cool long sleeve tee shirts and we've got some left so if you are interested please check out www.ontri.com/gearteeshirt.html.

New features…

You may have noticed new features popping up when you log in to your ontri.com account.  It is our commitment to continue to improve the site and many of the enhancements came directly out of suggestions from all of you so please let me know what we can do better.  We've got a long list of features we are working on now but I welcome any new additions to that list.  In addition we've made some recent investments in the performance of the site to make it as user friendly as possible from any web connection.  Just send me a note - my email address is jon@ontri.com and I check my email all the time.  (Actually, my friends tell me I have a slight email addiction but I can't be the only one who rides with a Blackberry in the back pocket of their cycling jersey can I?)

Find a training buddy...

ontri has over 11,000 members from all across the country and we are adding new members every day.  Finding a buddy to swim, bike and run with is a great way to help improve, stay on track and just add more enjoyment to your training.  Even if you are a person that likes to workout in solitude, having a buddy to chat with, share thoughts with or compete with in our virtual training competition can be a great way to stay motivated during the long season...and who knows maybe there is even a love connection out there in the ontri.com community.

When you log-in, click the team link.  From there you can search by age, location and sex across the entire ontri.com community.  Your search results will be displayed below and you can then click on a member's profile, learn a little about them, see what events they are training for, their pace based on their current workout log, any photos they've posted and then click on the link to email them directly if they are someone you would like to connect with.  From the team link you can also view and edit your own profile, upload a picture of yourself (the best way to get attention), edit your information or you can hide your profile if you do not want others to be able to view your profile or email you.  We've had hundreds of members make connections with other athletes already so update your profile and check out who's nearby.  You never know!

New Ironman training plan...

As ontri grows, so do the number of members who want to attempt the ultimate event, the Ironman!  For those of you training for your first Ironman or who just want to see what kind of commitment it takes, we added a new Ironman training plan this summer.  Our USAT certified coach, Katherine Schwabb, has completed multiple Ironman races and has coached many first timers.  She developed a great plan to help you gradually build up to this grueling event and it is available to all ontri.com members for free.  After you log-in, click the trainer tab, click on 'change my training plan' and select the first time Ironman program and the date of the event.  You can change your training plan any number of times without impacting your logged workouts so if you want to check it out you can always switch back to another program without having any impact on your completed workouts.

Weightlifting...

One of the most requested features since ontri.com was founded in 2004 has been the ability to log strength workouts.  The first version of the ontri.com weightlifting log was launched earlier this fall.  From the trainer tab, click the 'weightlifting' link.  You must first set up the list of exercises that you perform (E.g. bench press, lat pulldowns, sit-ups, etc.)  Once you have that list set up you can log weightlifting workouts from the 'log a workout' link on the home page or on the trainer tab.  Select the date, the exercise and then enter the reps and weight for each set.  You can add as many sets per day as you like for any number of different strength exercises and can always add and modify your list of exercises as you evolve your training program.  Check it out and let us know what you think.

Workout details...

ontri has always provided a way to view and edit your workouts on a month by month basis.  From the trainer tab, below your training program entires is the list of your workouts logged for the month with an edit link to update or delete any workout.  Below that is a monthly summary showing total miles, time, average pace and calories burned for each discipline.  You can change the month from the top of the page by selecting the month and year you wish to view and then clicking the 'go' button.  This will show both your training plan and your logged workouts for any month you choose.  In addition, we've added a new workout details report.  From the trainer tab click the 'reports' link and at the top you will see a 'My Detailed Workout History' report.  Select the time period and the workouts you wish to report on and you will see a detailed history of all your logged workouts including date, type, time, distance, pace, estimated calories burned and cumulative pace.  (cumulative pace is the average pace calculated up to and including the workout for that date and that workout type so you can see the impact each workout has on your overall pace)  At the bottom of the report shows the totals for that time period including average overall pace for swim, bike, run and other workouts.  I love looking back on my workout history for the year or my entire ontri.com workout history and seeing how many miles I've logged, how many hours I've put in and watching my pace fluctuate during different points in the season.

Training goals...

In addition to the training programs developed by our coaches, you can now set up simple training goals to work towards.  You can set up as many goals as you like and goals can overlap time periods.  For instance I have an annual goal for the total miles I want to complete in the calendar year and then I set up incremental goals each month to help me work towards the annual goal.  From the trainer tab, click the 'My Goals' link and then click 'add a new goal' at the bottom.  Select the starting date, the ending date and the number of miles you hope to log swimming, cycling and running during that period.  As you log miles the orange percentage bar will fill in and will turn to 'ontri blue' when you have completed the goal.  Your current goal will show up on the home page when you log in with all the others listed on the goals page.  Another great tool to help you stay on track!

Routes...

Earlier in the season we added a routes capability to keep track of common cycling and running routes that you use during your workouts.  You can set up as many routes as you like, name the route, enter the distance and a description of that route.  Then when you log a workout you can simply select from your list of routes and the distance will automatically be entered in the entry field.  From the trainer tab, click the 'My Routes' link to add or modify your route list and view your personal best time on each route.
