ontri.com Newsletter - Volume 2 - October 08, 2004

Welcome to the fall edition of the ontri.com newsletter.  For many, triathlon season is coming to a close and we would like to extend our congratulations to the hundreds of ontri members that took the plunge this year and completed their first triathlon.  May it be the first of many more to come.  Several members have shared stories with us about their first race, the energy they felt from being on the course with so many other athletes and the indescribable feeling of crossing the finish line.  Not surprisingly, one of the first things they did after finishing that first race was to sign up for another or start thinking about a longer race for next season.  Rest assured you are not alone in your addiction.  Many of you are still training for late season events and of course, as triathlon season comes to an end, that simply means the beginning of fall marathon season for many others.  ontri.com now has several clubs specifically for marathoners, and with hundreds of road races, half marathons and marathons from now through the end of the year, this is a great time to add one more race to your 2004 calendar.  And even if you don’t have a race approaching, that doesn’t mean you can’t continue training and logging your miles.  The “superstars of the month” competition is on every month and there will continue to be prizes throughout the fall and winter.

Help us grow and win an ontri.com long sleeve tee-shirt…

We are still adding hundreds of members each week but please do help us spread the word.  The more people who join the more valuable the ontri.com community will be for all of us.  You can invite friends to join your club at http://www.ontri.net/invite.html  (The members who get the most friends to join ontri by October 31, 2004 will be eligible to win a super cool long sleeve ontri.com tee-shirt, as seen at http://www.ontri.com/gearteeshirt.html)  For those who wish to start their own private club for friends, co-workers, training buddies, etc. we will gladly help you set that up as well.  Just send us an email at clubs@ontri.com and we’ll get you started.  It’s free!

10% off gear from trivillage.com…

Our partnership with trivillage.com is continuing this fall which means ontri.com members will continue to get 10% off all swimming, cycling and running gear purchased from trivillage.  Simply enter the coupon code found at www.ontri.com/gear.html during the checkout process to take advantage of this great deal.  trivillage.com offers free shipping on all purchases over $75, so this is a great time to pick up a new pair of Brooks running shoes, a new Ironman jogging stroller, or get a great deal on their huge selection of 2004 apparel.

A summer of exercise…

We are ecstatic about the enthusiasm you all have shown for ontri and amazed at the commitment to training that you all have.  As a community, we swam, biked and ran over 70,000 miles from May 1, 2004 through October 1, 2004.  This included close to 1600 miles of swimming, 50,000 miles on the bike and just a few miles shy of 20,000 running miles.  In that time, we exercised for nearly 10,000 hours averaging just over 17 mph on the bike, close to 9 minute miles running and about 28 minutes per mile in the water.  A rough estimate says we burned over 4.6 million calories, the equivalent of about 8,300 Big Macs.  Super-size that!

There have been a number of superstars over the months who have collected prizes for their efforts. Vince, Christine, Bob, Meredeth and Doug are among our workout champions, but the competition starts with a clean slate each month and it will continue all winter so no excuses!  Keep on it and help us get over 100,000 total miles by year end.

New Features…

We have continued to make improvements to the site all summer and are planning more for the late fall.  One of the most popular features is the competition reports.  From the trainer module, click on the ‘view reports’ link under the calendar and you can compare your workouts with those of other ontri.com members.  You can compare workouts by age, gender, state or across the entire ontri community.  It is a great way to gauge your progress and see how your training stacks up against your peers.  Another feature that has been hugely popular is the pace calculator which we recently improved.  When you view your workouts for the month from the trainer tab it now shows your distance, time and pace and calculates your totals and average pace for the month.  Every time you log a workout check out the new totals and see what the most recent run, bike or swim did to your average pace for the month.  To view a previous month, simply click on the scroll arrows under the calendar on the trainer page and you can compare your workouts this month to any of your previous months.  We are continuing to add features and are now planning to add a way to log weight lifting workouts and would welcome your input on that as well as any other suggestions.

Thanks for your support of ontri.com and please do keep the suggestions and feedback coming.  We are listening!

Happy training!
