ontri.com Newsletter - February 28, 2006

Welcome to the February 2006 edition of the ontri.com newsletter.  ontri continues to grow fast and its great to see all the activity on the message boards, to watch the heated superstars competition each month and to hear from so many of you who have found new training buddies on ontri.  Thanks to all of you for contributing to the ontri community and for helping spread the word.

Improving ontri.com…
We're always trying to improve the site and we welcome your input so please keep it coming.  Some recent highlights include:

  • To keep up with the growth of ontri, we recently added additional hardware including new web and database servers to make ontri faster and more reliable. We continue to back up all of your ontri data nightly and it is now secured in two locations to make sure we are covered in case of a hardware or software failure. So after you workout and log your workouts on ontri, you can rest doubly well.

  • As many of you had suggested, we merged the message boards from all the public clubs so members of our public clubs can now chat with one another. Since then the discussion boards have been booming with activity and helpful information.  If you've got a triathlon question, the ontri water cooler is a great place to post it as you are likely to get bombarded with information from those who have been there before.

  • We recently made it easier to create your own training club ontri. If you have a group of friends or teammates that you train with, this is a great way to stay in touch, plan events, share information and compete with one another in the monthly superstars competition. It's free to set up your own club and so your team can have its own fully interactive web site with all the ontri features, including the training programs and workout log for no charge and you can set it up yourself in minutes (from the admin tab click on “create your own private club”).

  • You can now change to a different club on your own (finally!).  All you need is the club id and club password from the club's creator and you can change to a new club on the fly (from the admin tab click the “change my club” link). All your workout data will move with you and your login and password will remain the same. Once you switch you will be logged in to your new club and remain in that club until you switch again.  You can only belong to one club at a time but you can change clubs as many times as you like.

  • As the word about ontri has spread, we've added many new athletes from around the world and have made some modifications to allow better international support.  However, we know that this area is far from perfect and will continue to improve our international capabilities for both finding a training buddy in your area and searching for races nearby. For those outside the U.S., thanks for your patience and suggestions and we will continue to improve in this area.

Winter pounds…
Like many of you, I had a busy and rewarding race season in 2005. My season finished with a marathon in October that I ran with my brother (thanks for waiting up Dan) and after my final race of the year it was nice to kick back and take some time off. My body needed the rest but after being on a high calorie diet and intense workout schedule for several months, as soon as I went into relaxation mode and followed that up with the holidays it didn't take long before I'd put on nearly 10 pounds. How does that happen so fast? It seemed like one minute I was in shape and feeling great and the next minute it was New Year's morning and I woke up with a hangover and 10 unwanted pounds. The good news is that I found a new trick to help get rid of those pounds that worked so well I thought I would share it with the ontri community.

It's very simple. All I did was write down every single morsel of food I ate for 6 weeks. Even if it was just a handful of peanuts or a single Lifesaver, I wrote it down. I also did my best to estimate the number of calories for all my food intake. By carefully measuring out the food that I cooked at home and trying to eat only at restaurants that provided nutritional information or had obvious comparables, I was able to keep a pretty close log of all calories I ate. Just like with logging workouts, it helped me to stay focused and stear clear of extra unneeded calories. That handful of peanuts or that cookie from the conference room is not as appealing if you know you've got to go put it in the log book. It kept me honest with myself and made me very aware of how quickly those extra calories can add up and I naturally ate healthier with little effort.

I lost 8 pounds in 6 weeks and really was not that hard. It took a little while to get used to measuring everything and a bit of diligence to log every meal and snack but other than that I didn't have to think about it much. It worked so well I am considering adding a nutrition log to ontri so if you think that would be helpful, I'd love to hear from you.

Looking for a great race in 2006 (Finger Lakes, New York)
Those of you who live near Western New York or who might travel there this summer, check out the Musselman and
Mini-Musselman as some great options for your race calendar. I know the race director well and he puts on a superb event.

MUSSELMAN
The Musselman Triathlon welcomes you to the Finger Lakes Region of New York - the second-largest wine-producing region in the country, behind Napa - for the third annual weekend of racing. Race day, which is July 16, 2006, includes a half-ironman, sprint, and MusselKids, and race weekend spills over with activities for the entire family, from the Saturday Expo to Movie Night to the gourmet pre-race dinner. Stay in the Athlete Village three miles from the starting line and be within walking distance of everything. This year we're introducing an elite wave (open to anyone) with a cash prize purse of $4,200. And as always, the race is perfect for beginners with a novice wave, little traffic on the roads, and the most numerous, helpful volunteers in all of triathlon.

MINI-MUSSELMAN
The Musselman Triathlon includes a sprint-distance race (500 yard swim, 15 mile bike, 3 mile run) which is perfect for beginners or those preparing for longer races later in the summer. Seneca Lake, where the race is held, is surrounded by over 60 wineries and countless vineyards, which you'll ride through on what's been called the "most scenic bike leg in America" by Inside Triathlon Magazine. The course follows the shoreline of the lake and passes through Mennonite farms, where you might come upon a horse & buggy on its way to church. The concluding run winds by ancient weeping willow trees by the lake, and residents turn out with sprinklers and hoses to make the final miles fly by.
