ontri.com Newsletter - Volume 4 - February 16, 2005

Welcome to the February 2005 edition of the ontri.com newsletter. Here in Boston, where we are up to our aerobars in snow, it's hard to believe that triathlon season is almost upon us. It is - and registration for many races is already open so its time to sign up as the popularity of triathlon is at an all time high and races will fill quickly. Putting my money where my mouth is, I signed up this week with a friend for a half Ironman race in August. Strangely, while that seems so far away now, I fear I'll be staring out at the water the morning of the race thinking “man I wish I had more time to train.” Since I find it tough mentally to train for one continuous eight month block, I'm now adding a couple of shorter races along the way to help break up the training and to add some check points and some fun to the process.

Find a triathlon in your area…
For those of you looking for races to fill your 2005 calendar, you're in luck. ontri.com and www.trifind.com have agreed to work together to provide a comprehensive database of races all over the world. Check it out at www.ontri.com/events.html (click on the advanced search link to see the trifind and ontri integration.) There are several hundred races listed and the list grows every day so bookmark the link and check back often. There is also a link there to suggest a race for the database so if you know a great one that isn't listed, please let us know.

5,000 members and growing…
As of the end of January, we're up over 5,000 members and continuing to grow fast. Thanks to all of you who've helped us grow by telling your friends about ontri. Our goal is to get to 10,000 in 2005 so please do continue to help us spread the word. In that, we've made it easy for you to invite others to join your club. When you log-in, click on the admin tab, there is now an “Invite New Members” link. From there, simply enter a list of email addresses separated by commas, add a personal note, click send and your friends will get an email with a link to join your ontri club.

Anyone training with a group of friends, co-workers or a formal triathlon club, please let us know and we can set up a private ontri.com club for you for free. Triathlete Magazine, the world's largest triathlon magazine, has set up an ontri.com club for their readers. It's been a great success so far and we'd be glad to help other groups take advantage of this great offer (see http://trimag.ontri.com )

Also, check out the March 2005 edition of Healthsmart Today Magazine, found at your local Whole Foods stores. There is a terrific article about triathlon and ontri.com by writer, triathlete and ontri.com member Bryce Edmonds.

The Triathlete Magazine training experts…
Triathlete Magazine has assembled a panel of triathlon training experts who have offered to answer select training questions from ontri members. If you've got an interesting training question, send an e-mail to feedback@triathletemag.com  and the panel will post answers to selected questions each month.

We've also added links to selected articles from Triathlete Magazine at www.ontri.com/news.html -- Check out their article by T.J. Murphy entitled “Nutrition: Making Weight” that is linked on our news page now. T.J. provides some insights into eating right while training for an endurance event.

10% off gear at trivillage.com…
As always, visit http://www.trivillage.com for all your triathlon gear needs. They're one of the few triathlon gear sites I've seen that ships internationally and they've got some of the best deals around on apparel, heart rate monitors, running shoes, bike accessories, wetsuits and more. ontri.com members get 10% off all purchases by entering the code ontri012004 at checkout so do take advantage of this great opportunity.

Race results…
You may have noticed the new race results feature on ontri that we launched at the end of December. This allows ontri members to share race results from all types of races including triathlons, duathlons as well a singe stage running, cycling and swimming events. There is a notes section as well so you can post not only your times but also any interesting tales from your race to share with your club members. The results get logged as workouts and count towards the competition so be sure to log your mileage and time accurately. Don't be shy, there are many out there who would love to hear your race day stories. And remember even if you are the last one to cross the finish line you finished miles ahead of all those who have never attempted a multi-sport event. No matter how long it takes you are a triathlete the moment you cross the finish line of your first sprint.

Coming soon, premium training programs including Ironman distance…
We are excited to announce that we are working now with former Ironman world champion Karen Smyers to offer premium training programs to ontri.com members. These programs will offer much more detail than our current free programs, will be customized based on your heart rate zones and are being developed by one of the all time great triathletes and one of the world's top triathlon coaches. Karen is truly one of those incredible people and it was inspirational for me just to talk with her about her training programs. These programs will run between $59 and $129 per program but I assure you will be well worth it. Stay tuned, they will be available soon!

Thanks again for your support of ontri.com and please do keep the suggestions and feedback coming. We are listening!

Happy training!
