Message: I've been training for a hlaf iron man and doing well so far. I consider myself to be in good shape, but I struggle with the swimming. I was wondering what stroke most people use and if there are any tips that help me relax while in the water? I feel like I'm not conserving energy at all and am just tiring myself out after a while.

Message: My best advice is to take a swim stroke course. Most YMCA's or local swim clubs have one or even a 30 minutes session with the local swim coach is the best way to figure out what you need to do. It is a minimal cost but the outcome is tremendous!! I paid 30 bucks for a 6 week class and most swim coaches will charge 30-50 bucks for an hour of instruction.
There are just too many things to work on and reading manuals doesn't give you a visual that a trained eye can see and tell you face to face. They can also give you advice on how to swim and breathe in open water and what to wear for certain conditions. The most beneficial is they will show you the most effecient stroke and how to breathe and make your swim more enjoyable than just a task!
I was a struggling swimmer in great shape but lost a ton of time in the water and wasted energy. My first year I was doing 36s for Olympic distance which put me in the 100s overall while my biking and running were always top ten. I paid for the course and since then I have swam under 24 minutes for the Olympic distance and 30 minutes for half ironman and an 1:02 for the full Ironman (all with wetsuit). I would say it is seriously worth the while because it makes the rest of your race all the more fun and not feel like catching up! Best of luck and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions!
