Message: I have been spending a lot of time on the body for life forum and getting tons of great info for my new challenge. I am taking the BFL challenge in hopes to become stronger and fastera at this sport. I am so impressed w/ the eating plan and it is really easy to follow. I do have a spring coming up June 11 - my first race since my knee surgery. I am hoping the intense cardio I have been doing w/ BFL every other day w/ some long runs on the weekends will be enough training for it. It is an open water swim, however, and I am a litle leary of my confidence for some wierd reason. I am in the choir at church and the other night at practice our choir director had just come from a visitation of a wonderful man who lived in their subdivision who had neen struck and killed onwhile cycling (on mothers day) he was out on one of our feeder highways early in the morning - not much traffic at all - really really sad. It sure makes me see how dangerous this sport can be - so many mororists just don't pay attention at all and think we have not right to the road. I admire those of you who have so many guts and so little fear -. Anyway, I will check in every week. I still enjoy reading all of your great posts.

Message: I had not really heard of BFL until your previous post. Then I received something in the mail about it just yesterday. Weird. It sounds like a great program. If you are leary of your open water swim, maybe it would be a good idea to get a couple of practices in before your race. Good luck - keep us postedon BFL and your race (it's soon!).

Message: Yes, it is a great program - the eating plan is great and pretty easy - just had to give up a couple of things I like - but Body for Life is going to be my way of life. The real tough thing about the challenge is the cut back on training for Tris - only 20 min of intense cardio (but I do mean intense) every other day and the other days - intense weight training for 45/55 min - I was not doing any weight work and my body just was not changing or getting stronger so now I am committed. I am trying to do something a little tri like on Sat mornings so I hope to get through a couple of sprints over the summer w/ little specific training - we will see. Different challenges for different goals.
anyway - bodyforlife.com and check it out.

Message: Hi there, I'm new here but I thought I'd send a message as I was interested in how you're making out with BFL. I actually just read the book this weekend. One thing that didn't sit right with me was his suggestion to NOT eat for at least an hour after a workout, from a tri training prespective, that goes against everything I've been taught or do, later on he does say that if you're interesed in improving athletic performance then you should eat before, during, and after training. The BFL program is designe to lose body fat, tri training and following the BFL program might be like trying to fit a square peg into a round whole. The nutrition plan makes sense, eating clean is always a good idea, I hope it goes well for you, looks like if you stick to it, results are enevitable.
Cheers,
Jen

Message: I agree with Jen's message; eating immediately after working out (like within half an hour) helps replenish your depleted glycogen stores, which provides the best fuel for athletic performance. I haven't heard of this BFL program, but I"ll look into it.

As far as open water swim goes, I highly recommend practicing that as much as possible before your tri. The first time I got into the ocean to swim, I freaked out so bad I couldn't put my head in the water. Open water swimming is quite different, and it's better to not have that kind of surprise on race day.

Message: Thanks guys - I have done several open water swims (lake) not ocean and I just still get a little nervous - expecially the first one of the season. Our practice lake is such a trek from me that it is a little bit of a hassle - funny I actually live at the start of one or our most popular tris here and we have a two mi lake - but they won't let us swim in it at all - only for the tri. I have been tempted to go out early in the morning but there are the neighborhood watch dogs. I wil probably go out to the practice spot this time around. Before my half IM last year I did practice in that lake - real good to be familiar w/ it.
Yes, that is what I said about body for life - the waiting an hour after the cardio (but keep in mind he is ony asking 20 min of intense cardio and the hour following is when the fat is burned the best - hence the reason most of them get up at the crack of dawn to get it done - since I work so early I don't want to run outside in the dark by myself and I am not going to the gym that early to run the treadmill.
I am into my second week and I think I have a plan for me - I am following the program to a tee during the week and doing something longer (a small brick or long run (6 mi w/ intervals) or a long bike. I will make sure I consume more carbs that day but the real key is carb & protein at every meal - shake/bar meal 4 and 6 and low fat - lots and lots of water and of course, the weights - ah - the weights - my nemisus for 5+ years since I retired my position as a personal trainer at a health club for 17 years to be a teacher - yes I will have some summer days off so I will be able to take advantage of the early mornings. I just love new goals and challengers and I feel so committed to this one. I think my knee surgery made me look at what I am doing and I need to be stronger in most places.
Thanks for the conversation.
Mary
