Discussion: Ocean swim

Subject: Ocean swim

Message: I am as new as they come. I have no problem swimming a beginner's pace for 40 minutes in a pool with no breaks...however, I understand it is more daunting to be swimming without walls and with waves. Is it possible to only train in a pool...or should I take a trip to the coast pre-race to practice?? Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

Message: I definitely recommend swimming at least once outside if possible. If you can, do it at the race location - if not, at least get in the ocean somewhere. It is a bit different, especially sighting. It will help you relax on race day if you've practiced this.

Good luck!

Message: Definitely try to swim in open water before the race! Salt water adds buoyancy, an added bonus. Pratice breathing up instead of to the side for direction. Also, make SURE your goggles don't leak!
