Message: I just started training this month and I'm extremely pumped about this and I want to do this for myself bad. THe only thing that could stop me is my knees. I've had a history of knee problems. Does anyone have suggestions for knee strenghtening or anything. Thanks.

Message: Run long and slow and use a heart rate monitor to know you are staying aeorbic -this will take alot of pressure off your legs. You also do not need to run everyday. Give your legs time to recover.

Use the bike - it will again take some pressure off the knees and you will be surprize how it helps your running endurance. Also, it is the longest part of the race where you can gain the most anyway.

Learn patience - getting pumped too soon will only lend itself to over use injury.

Although you can do tri's right away and have fun, it takes years for your body to truly adapt to this type of endurance.

Message: I don't know exactly what your knee problem is. I had a little fall from a helicopter while in the Marine Corps and it cost me a Division 1 scholarship while I rehabbed (which took 2.5 years to fully recover).
I have been doing half ironmans and full IM's regularly and I had a little trouble at first. I ended up getting 2 cortisone shots and that has worked for over 4 years now. I also take Glucosamine with Chondrotin and MSM (its all one tablet) I also take Fish Body Oils. they help your joints recover and it helps provide a natural lube for all your joints preventing cartlidge tears and breakdown
I can actually tell if I go 3 days without the two supplements. Hope this helps
As for running try to run on soft surfaces and if you can't get on grass or a trail all the time run on the road versus the sidewalk if possible. The sidewalk is 3 times harder than the road (sounds wierd but it is true I found it out on runnersworld.com
Hope this helps

Message: I too have bad knees. "The Runner's Repair Manual" has some exercises for on avoiding knee injuries which focus on quad development and working the muscles around the joint. I mimic the effect of these exercises during swimming workouts, using a kickboard and doing a few hundred yards of flutter kick, not whip (breast stroke) kick. I'm still getting a good cario workout, while preventing the knee injuries.
