Message: Hi Everybody,
I've been reading the message board for about a month and decided it was time to introduce myself. I am like Erin I am new to this sport but I am VERY excited. I started training 6 weeks ago.
I keep a journal of my protein and carb intake, my training schedule, I bought 5 books on the sport and I am doing a Total Immersion into learning about the sport. Usually if I do something I do it all the way. I was a swimmer in college and I used to run 10 & 12K races for 3 years but when it comes to biking .....whew that would be the weekness right there. Have any of you read or know of a website or trainer that I could use to help me in this area. Maybe a camp for example. I don't even know how to change a tire.....to funny huh. Anyone's help would be fantastic. I am really committed and I have a specific goal in mind of where I want to be next year. Thanks so much for all your help in advance. Also, for many of you thanks for contributing your knowledge on this site because it has already helped me just reading things over the last month.

Chow,
Leah .- Newberg, OR

Message: Leah, like you, I'm so glad to have found this site. I also bought a book and checked out 5-6 from the library. My friends were giving me crap on vacation for reading a book about cycling. "How are you going to learn about cycling from a book?" I had to admit, they're a little right. Anyway, I bought a bike the day after I learned I wouldn't be running the Boston Marathon this year because of some stress fractures. On my second ride, I got a flat. I learned the hard way that I needed 1) a patch kit or 2) a spare and 3) a cell phone. Did I have any of them? Nope. Anyway, I have been leaning on my local bike shop to flatten out (pun intended) my learning curve. It was a great help to find a shop where the people are friendly and helpful. My shop even took me through changing a flat (watching and talking me through it). It boosted my confidence. Nothing beats learning by trial and error, but if I were you, I'd take my cell phone. Cheers, Kimberly

Message: leah,

You already have background at the two most difficult events to be a beginer in. Just start out with joy rides on the bike so that you will enjoy it while learning the little yet important things, like the flat fixing and what to wear.

Have fun,
Ron

Message: Good luck, i have much the same background swimming and a bit of running and finished my first Tri last weekend. Just get into a training plan and you'll do fine. I actually joined the YMCA and have been taking a spinning class waiting for the weather to cooperate around here with limited time on the street cycling. You've got quite a while to train for your tri so just find a program and go for it.
