Discussion: Completed my 1st triathlon

Message: I completed my first triathlon this last sunday: The Runner's High Tri Miami Sprint on Key Biscayne.
I swam the .25 miles in 12:17
1st transition in 1:56
Bike the 12.1 miles in 43:44
2nd transition in :36
Ran the 3.1 miles in 24:37
TOTAL = 1:23:10
I came in 114 out of 286 participants and 3rd overall for first timer.

I used a road bike that was on a curbside going out with the garbage, spruced it up the best it could be. It was disheartening being passed by other participants in bikes that were all over $1000. I thought about getting a different bike for the race or at least getting some decent pedals. However, some of the most common advice on this forum is to race like you practice. I also opted to swim without goggles for the same reason. I didn't like wearing them when I trained, so I wasn't going to change for the race even if every other participant was wearing them. I hope to have a decent bike for the next race so I don't have to hear "nice bike!" from other participants.

Thanks to all for the input on this site. This place is a great source of motivation, it also helps to know that others are just starting out in the sport and have many of the same questions. I can't wait until my next race and am sure I'll trim some time off. Thanks again.

Message: Man, talk about taking a tough road in. No goggles, and a bike somebody else threw out! Great work, and great times. Congrats.

Message: You did great Martin,

You finished on the fast side of the midde of the pack and win the thrifty triathlete award!

You also resisted the great temption of triing new equipment for the race. I know that had to be tough but was the best decision.

Ron

Message: Good job Martin, I agree, thrify trier award. I would have had to splurge on goggles.

Experiment until you find a pair you like. They are not all created equal. I have always been a swimmer and I cannot imagine swimming without them.

Message: I have 3 pairs of goggles. I just don't like to wear them. What are the benefits of wearing goggles? Should I keep trying to find ones that are comfortable?

Message: Great job martin.
Goggles, you wear them for such a short period of time so I would say get used to them. Without, I'm sure your technique suffers for both swimming and spotting/sighting.

Message: Congratulations, wow you are such an inspiration. Talk about having "grit" -- ooh rah!

As for the goggles, it took 4 pr but I finally found "the ones" and I can't even feel them, they don't leak, they're awesome. You might just need to keep trying different brands. I was able to read reviews online and found several to choose from on swim2000.com.

Best of luck to you on your next Tri!

You made me laugh with your bike & googles. I cannot imagine swimming without googles, I tried 3 pairs so far & didn't find THE one yet...

Message: Great going Martin! My first tri is next Sunday, I hope to do as well as you did. I never used goggles either, but started recently. Can't imagine swimming without them now. It's nice to be able to see after the swim also, goggles help with that.

Message: Martin, way to go!!!! I would get use to the goggles. They are definitely beneficial in spotting your swim and protecting your eyes from the water is very important as some water is not as clean as you think. However, my hats are off to your for the Frugal Triathlete award of the year. I imagine you sill be able to definitely place higher with a better bike time.

Bobo - fear is normal in your first race however it is also an advantage. Fear drives certain parts of the brain and makes for very efficient and quick thinking. It is a gift from God that when fear and pressure are applied our brains go into super mode that allows us to focus more intently. The key thing is to pace yourself during the race. Do not become consumed by emotion and swim, run or bike too fast only to fade. It is better to start slow and finish fast than start fast and finish slow. As you start each part of the TRI pace yourself and as you get going your fear will go away and your training will kick in and take over. Then slowly increase your pace within your comfort zone. And most important - have fun!!!!!
