Message: Has anyone ever gotten so lost on the way to a race they had to bag it? I was on the way to the Jersey Devil Man this sunday and fell asleep (I was in the passenger seat). When I woke up, we were driving in the wrong direction and there was not enough time to get to the start. We decided to bail. I was so tired at the time, I wasn't really coherent anyway.

If we had shown up after the start, would it be possible to jump in for the ride and run? Has anyone ever done this? If so, how do you know when to start?

Message: I can't say that I have ever gotten lost. That is why you make sure you do everything the day before the race. All races are open the day before for check in and packet pick up and stuff like that. YOu can also check out the swim bike and run courses that way on race day you know where everything is. Plus it gives you a chance to scout out the transition area and really know how to set up your race for the next day.
It would be impossible for you to get in and do the ride run after the race starts at any race! Pretty much every race I have ever done closes the transition area an hour before the start. After that you can't get your packet or even get body marked plus you can't get your bike inspected. There are people making sure that no one gets in the transition area while the race is in progress.
I was at the Devilman (I did the half). It was a real good race as are most lin-mark and pirahna sports events.
My best advice would be to make sure you get everything done the day before that way on race day you just show up set your bike up and concentrate on the race. Some races don't allow same day packet pickup and some will even have you rack your bike the night before for less confusion on race day. It isn't really a sport where you can show up an hour ahead of time and think that you can get everything done. I did everything the day before including mark my bike and I still got there at 6am to set up and warm up and my race didn't start until 845.
Good luck with your jump up to Olympic! My feeling is if you have done a few sprints the jump up isn't going to be too bad. Once you get out of the water it is all about going forward either riding running or walking.
