Message: Hey everybody, Ive been lurking around this site for a few months now and keeping my training log here. I really appreciate the wealth of information that you all contribute it has helped be quite a bit and has been motivational. I am 43 years old and 1 week before my first Tri, WildFlower Olympic Distance in Monterey Ca and wondering about how much I should work out this week. Should I just do some short distance work? I was thinking about putting one more brick workout in, but not sure if that is the right thing to do at this point. Is anybody else participating in this Tri?
thanks,
Steve.

Message: I suggest that you do only very short workouts the next few days. Warm up then a short Swim Bike or Run at race speed then cool down. Do not let yourself get tired or sore. The two to three days before your race do only warm up S, B and R and get lots of rest as the excitement of anticipating the race may not let you sleep well the night before your race.
Younger people that are in great shape may not need as long of a taper but I know that I do.

Have a great first race.
Ron

P.S
Go through the motions of the transitions. Make sure that you have everything that you need and know where you will put things- Sunglasses on your handlebars or in your hemet? things like that. Then make a check list for yourself so that you will not be nervous about having everything right on race morning.

Message: Steve, I was always told to taper the week of the event. Just as Ron has noted. I was also told decrease intensity but not necessarily duration to allow your body to go into a recovery (peak) mode. Remember when doing brick workouts that there are really many kinds of bricks. Don't do one that is giong to overly exerted in any one discipline. i.e there are bike to run bricks where the focus is on the bike or on the run. Two completely different kinds of bricks with different intended outcomes. Normally, this is a time for recovery and a reward for all the hard work you put in to getting this far. Best wishes on the Tri.

Message: Steve,
I am doing my first Olympic Distance in two days (on Sunday) and following a Gale Bernhardt schedule.
My schedule for today is to just do: 20 minutes on the bike and a 10 minute run. Nothing streneous.
Like Tim and Ron said, I think the week of the Tri is mainly for lots of rest and very short workouts.
I have been taking it easy all week and have had only 1h30 min total for the week.

Kick butt on your Oly in May and above all have a great time!

Hope this helps,

Jael

Message: First tri and you pick Wildflower?! At least you went for the Oly and not the half. I hear it's a tough one but put on really well. I don't think I can add any more to the words of wisdom all ready stated. Just want to say good luck and have fun on the climbs. Let us know how it goes.

Jael,

Good luck on your Oly. I imagine St.Anthony's will be a lot flatter course than Wildflower. Will wait for the RR.

Message: thanks a lot for the words of wisdom and support. Yeah, it probably wasn't the best choice for my first tri, but being clueless about the sport seemed like a good idea at the time. Goal is to finish! I'll let you konw how it goes. Thanks.
