Message: Hello everyone,

I am training for my first triathlon in july in New York City
As part of my training, I would like to do a duathlon in my hometown next week.
I have a few question for those of you who participate in duathlon. Do you change shoes twice, ateach transition ? It is going to be a 2.5 miles run, 5 miles bike and finish by a 2.5 miles run again. Is it with the time changing shoes at each transition or should I stick with my running shoes ?
I was going to go to the bike shop today to buy cleapless pedals but now, I am wondering if I should wait till after the race nexte week ?
Thanks for your help !!
Charlotte

Message: Charlotte,

for a 5 mile bike, it's a matter of personal preference. 5 miles is really such a short distance on the bike, that if you had regular pedals and just jumped on your bike with your running shoes, you'd save the time in transition that the clipless pedals would save you.

The question is, do you want to go through the trouble of changing your pedals?

Message: I think you should buy the shoes. You have to use them some time so why not in a race environment? Are you competing for a top 5 in your age group? Buy the shoes and pedals and start practice using them in a car park. Put race laces into your shoes so it is fast fast fast.
One hint is to leave your shoes in the pedals and use a couple of rubber bands to tie one of your pedals to the frame. This way you can run out of transition and the shoes are not scraping across the ground and put your preferred foot on top of or into your shoe and swing your other leg over and start cycling. When you come into the dismount are make sure your shoes are undone and your feet are pedaling on top of them. You need to practice this. When you dismount be careful because sometimes one of your shoes can get caught as it spins over and come off!!You will also experience putting the shoes on after riding in race conditions so get used to the wobbly effect of bending over! Is it grass or a road course for the run? I've done some tri's that would make you shiver in freight at all the broken glass in a car park.

A SIMULATED TRANSITION JUST CANT BEAT REAL EXPERIENCE!
Tri and prosper!

Message: Thanks Kevin and Jamie,

The tri is next to a beach, and the run is going to be mainly on grass. It is very clean so I am not concerned about the trash on the ground.
I think I am going to go for the clipless pedals. Since it is to be my first duathlon, I don't have any expectation for this race. It is just going to be a "warmup" and learn experience !
Thanks guys
