Message: Chip timing has been around for quite a while now and is really great for giving you your splits. It's a simple velcro strap with a small transmitter chip in it that you'll attach around your ankle. Each chip has a different signal and is assigned to one participant. When that person passes over an electronic mat, the mat will pick up the chip's signal and registers it into a computer to mark your time. Hundreds of people can pass over these mats at one time and each one would be picked up. They use them at marathons to record your actual time (compared to the gun time). They're waterproof too if you're wondering. They usually put the mats at the entrance and exits to the transsion area and may even put some around the course to make sure you pass certain check points. Some will fail so it's best to keep track yourself with a stop watch or note the time when you finish. I had one fail on me during an open water swim event and I just gave the officials the time off my watch.

Message: Thanks John ! & also for the advice on tracking the time with the watch, I didn't think the chip could fail.
This is my first tri next week-end so I'm stressing out already & wondering many questions !

Message: Karine, stop stressing and go out and have fun....just enjoy the race and the moment. I'm sure you'll do well and when you're finished you'll want to sign up for another race. Like the rest of us you'll learn things that you couldn't learn on this board but can only get from personal experience. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Message: Yer welcome Karine. I know it's hard not to stress. If you don't you're not normal. Use it positively and just keep reviewing what you'll do during the race (ie: how will you approach the bouys, the sequence in transsions, gears you'll use on a certain hill etc.). When that particular moment comes you'll be mentally prepared. Don't worry about what may happen (like a flat) but be prepared if it does. Have fun and don't forget the report after.
PS nice bike.
