Message: Hi- I have been running marathons but the joints are getting achy so I thought I'd try a TRI. I know there is lots to learn- but for starters - what should I wear? I don't want to spend tons of money- incase I drown in the swim.... any recommendations for the most cost effective but helpful items to wear? Please tell me what to get- that won't make me go broke- but will keep me comfortable!
Thanks

Message: Hi Nancy Welcome to tris! More addictive than running I think.

So basic items you'll need.
-bike preferably road unless you have a wish to make your life difficult
-running shoes
-goggles
-helmet
-tri shorts and jersey, or a trisuit

some not so basic but items that make your life much easier:
-clipless pedals and shoes
-race number belt
-wetsuit
-HRM
-bike computer
-sunglasses
-hat for running

So all this is my personal opinion. I'd go with separate race shirt and shorts. I recomend 2 short brand I've found I liked. Sugoi and Zoot.
Let me take you through a race for a better understanding of the whole thing.

Wetsuit, sports bra, shorts, and goggles on for the swim. (If you wish to wear your tri jersey to swim thats fine.) Race provides swim cap. Save it and reuse it. You swim, get out run into T1 aka transition. As your running into T1 start stripping off swim attire. In T1, put your jersey on then sunglasses, then helmet (buckled), then socks and bike shoes. Fly outta there and bike your butt off. Back into T2 again while stripping off bike attire. REMEMBER helmet CANNOT be unbuckled till you have dismounted your bike. Ok, so your stripped. Running shoes on. Grab hat, race belt with # attached, energy gel, and hat. Run outta there while attaching hat and belt and sucking down gel. Run till you finish and viola!! Your a triathlete!

Message: I have a sort of related question . . . My first tri is July 9 and I am very concerned about my socks and shoes going onto my wet feet. I assume I'm not going to have time to dry them off in T1, but I DO NOT WANT BLISTERS! How do you deal with this issue?

Message: Jamie, Just lay a towel down in T1. When you get out of the water and get to your bike quickly dry your feet off then slip into your socks and you're on your way.

Message: Bring a 5 gallon pail or little camp stool to sit on too. It'll make a world of difference

Message: 1x piece of clothing elastic
2x small pins for your race number

Don't fall over getting out of the water, walk to your bike if feeling light headed (this will also help prevent you falling forward into your bike) have a drink first then hop onto your bike and enjoy. You will catch them all up on the run!
