Discussion: stationary bike?

Subject: stationary bike?

Message: hello, I am starting training for my first triathlon and I am in good shape for the run and swim portion. However, the bike is a different story. The only bike I own is a mountain bike. Is it ok to train on that until I can buy a road bike or would a stationary bike at the gym be better? Any advice would be appreciated.

Message: Your mountain bike will be fine. I think it is far better to acutally be out riding where you are not only improving your cardilvascular health and strength but your bike handling skills as well. Being in Flordia, the weather is not an issue, unlike us unfortunate souls in the upper great lakes area where Spring does not come until May. If you like the sport then you can consider getting a road or time trialing bike.

Welcome and Good Luck - Andy

Message: Kendal,
as a good alternative you can also take a few spinning classes.
It will get your legs also used to working more rapidly...
It is also a very good aerobic workout...
I agree with Andy. The mountain bike will do. I trained on my moutain bike almost entirely before my first sprint triathlon. I had ordered a Trek and did not get it until two weeks before my race and it did work!
So, no worries....

Message: A number of years ago a friend used to do a majority of his early season riding on a MTB with slick tires.
He was, for several years, nationally ranked at the top of his age group in duathlon. I guess you could not argue with those results. He owned a bike shop so one could conclude he had a good reason.

Message: Thank you for all the input.. I'll definetly give the mountain bike a try for training until I can actually afford a road bike.

Message: Kendal,
I recently (last week) switched to slicks on my mountain bike (see My First Flat), and I couldn't believe the difference it made! Believe me, if you've been training on your MTB and switch to slicks, you should be just fine.
