Discussion: Newbie runner, any suggestions?

Subject: Newbie runner, any suggestions?

Message: I just signed up for my first tri in August. I am not a runner, but love swimming and biking. Right now, I'm doing walk/jog in my training, working my way up to running for 30 minutes. Anyone have any suggestions to help make me a runner? Any advice for a newbie, such as ways to prevent injury, energy tricks, etc?

Message: Shelly,
if you are a brand new runner try to join your local running club if possible.
When I first started running I did it on my own because I did not know any better but it actually worked.
What I did was to try to run for 5 minutes non stop then walked to 30 minutes.
Then I gradually increased my running time and decreased my walking time.
I tried to increase my running time by at least 5 minutes every week or more if I felt comfortable until I was able to run all 3.1 miles without stopping. If you have time to do a 5K (3.1 miles) before your sprint triathlon, that would be a good "warm up" to give you a feel for a 3.1 mile run.
Also, make sure you stay hydrated, and drink plenty of fluids after your run and every mile if you can.

Message: A running club is a good start or even a running buddy. You have plenty of time before your August race. Don't worry too much about your running. There are many who just fine without a strong run. Take your time and built your miles up. Have fun.

Message: I think Jael said it.
Another variation is to run for 3 walk for 3min up to 45 min gradually increasing run time and decreasing walk time minute by minute over several weeks.
