Message: I just started working with a coach recently and he is a co-developer of this program called Evolution Running. Anyway he went and studied the Kenyan and north African runners to see whey they were so good. He found that they weren't any different cardio but they are just plain more effecient.
Well I was reluctant to try because I am a 4:27 miler and a 15:12 5k runner and I did compete for the Marine Corps for a number of years before switching to tris. So my wife and I went to his clinic and now own his DVD and I have been using it for about a month now and I am trully amazed!! I feel way more natural off the bike even after long runs I feel like I did less work. I am looking forward to a great year of racing and hopefully getting Kona slot.
If anyone wants to check out his website it I will put it down below. I have to admit some of the stuff seemed pretty un-natural at first and it almost made me feel like I wasn't getting any benefits from it but the more I do the drills and the more I practice this technique the better I feel. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!!

Message: Got the video, practice the techniques and drills. My run has gotten easier with less stress on my wornout knees. Recovery is quicker also. I'll second the video, it's helped me a lot. When everythings flowing, it feels like you're floating down the road with hardly any effort (given that your not pushing the pace). We'll see how it goes this weekend when I do my first tri of the season.

Message: The main thing is to avoid overstriding and focus on turnover with shorter strides. There isn't really one thing that stands out more so than a build up of everything. Lets just say that I have totally changed the way I ran and now find it a whole lot easier off the bike!! I never had any problem just running and I can still get into the mid 16's for 5k but I could never run well off the bike. This year I seem to be running better on my bricks then I did at any point in my racing with less hours spent running.
I would definitely check out the video or the book!!

Message: I've heard about this DVD and your review convinced me to bite the bullet and order it. I bought a new unopened copy off of ebay today, 4/3/06, for $24.95+$4.95 for shipping. If it helps my mechanincs any at all towards injury prevention, its worth the $30. Any speed boost is just a bonus.

Message: Ditto what Jamie said about the stride length. I'm currently working on the pacing also to build up to 90 spm. With all the rain we've had the ocean waters got quite polluted with runoff and the tri may turn into a run-bike-run. If so, that'll really put the technique to the test.

Message: Would this be of help to a new runner like me? I was told last week at track I have no naturally ability to run (der, like I hadn't figured that out by the time I was 6 and playing soccer) and I should stick to running 12 minute miles to stop my-self from getting hurt. Basically, just go home. My times are comming down quickly but I am not increasing my runs by any great length. Just sticking to my training plan.

Message: A high cadence run is the best tri-running advice. I couldn't image tri-running any other way.

Do you do any speed work? I dropped my pace by 1.5 minutes/mile last fall simply by focusing on speedwork with my coach on the treadmill. When I raced for the first time after that I was passing people on the hills left and right. I was shocked at what a difference it made.

The advice to be careful and not hurt yourself is of course good advice, however there are always ways to improve your time.

I'd say start with the high cadence running by either getting the DVD or working with someone locally. Once you get the technique down you can focus more on improving your time. The amount of energy you save by changing your technique should make running after biking significanly more comfortable and more importantly will allow you to have the reserve you need to cruise up the hills and finish strong.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!
Alison

Message: Jamie,
This will help runners of all abilities!! Like I said earlier I had run 4:27 mile and a 15:12 5000 when I was competing for the All Marine team and I still got a lot out of this. Basically I had no problem running fast it was running off the bike that I have had problems with, but now I notice that I am more fluent both on my bricks and my fresh runs.
Depending what your goal is I would still do speed workouts. You can improve your times by adding distance and improving your economy but once you get to a certain point you can only run faster by running at paces quicker than you race at. If you notice the worlds best marathon runners almost all of them are or were at the top of the world in the 10,000 meters. Most of them can run competitively at races from 5k thru the marathon and that all goes back to speed and economy. Even for my Ironman stuff and half IM I do a lot of 800s and uphill 400s just to work on my speed and power getting my body used to going at something a lot quicker than 8 minute pace. Plus I like to be able to go out run some 5 milers and 10ks and be able to stick it to the just runners LOL.
I definitely think that the video or the book will help tremendously. If you are a new runner than you won't have the 13 years of improper running to correct like I did so it might not be as tough for you to switch. 4.5 -8 percent is the performance gain by just improving your economy. That is 36 seconds per hour at 4.5 percent. I will take that any day of the week! Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to email me!

Message: I have never been a fast runner. In football they teach you how to be a power runner (I was D line). When I started running seriously I was a 10min/mi. I got down to 8 and was happy. My best 5K at a tri was 7:24 last year. Yesterday our tri was turned into a DU because of poor water conditions. A 2 mi. run to start and 5K to finish. On the 5K I ran a 7:07min/mi and felt myself getting stronger towards the end after I got rid of my riding legs. I'll attribute this to the Evlolution video and it's techniques. I feel I still have room for improvment because the only the thing holding me back is my breathing. As I improve my effeciency I believe my breathing will get better. At 45 years I can safely say that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Message: I received the DVD a little over a week ago. Nicely put together and makes perfect sense. I have definitive proof that it has helped my run. At the Plano Pacers web site, http://planopacers.org/score_calculator/, they have a scoring calculator for runs. My last two runs are 7 and 8 points higher than my previous weeks run, which is the difference between a below-average runner and an average runner. Not only that, but I finished each of my last two runs with plenty of energy left and absolutely no knee, shin or feet pain. I know I could have gone faster, but I'm nervous pushing to much of a speed increase to quick. I'm going to increase my per mile pace by another 30 secs this week.

One question though, the technique says efficient runners have about 180 strides/min. I'm only getting between 160-165 and I feel very ackward just trying to get that high of a rate. As my speed increases from 8:15-8:30 miles to 7:00-7:30 miles, will it be easier or more difficult to increase the strides/min?

Message: Thank goodness you have 180 strides. I read some folks saying 90 steps which I guess means for each foot. I've been counting around 210 and my times are comming down with no extra effort.(I could be getting fitter). I've ordered the DVD and look forward to getting it.
