Discussion: treadmill running

Message: Everytime I run on a treadmill my toes hurt and get blistered. If I run outside I have no problem whatsoever and can run for 10 miles. What's the deal with the treadmill? Can anyone suggest a sock or something that might help. I run in Mizuno Wave Rider 8's and love them. Recently did a half-marathon in them with no problem at all. They are only 6 weeks old and I've run in this model shoe for the past year changing them every 3 months or so with a weekly average of 20-25 miles.

I've been running on some treadmills for quite some time now and I had the same problem for a while. I found it is difficult to pace yourself at a constant speed with a belt compared to natural running. During your outdoor runs you may very your pace without even knowing it. When you run on a treadmill the belt is constant. If you shorten your stride just a little bit you may be stubbing your toes without even knowing. What most people do is shorten their stride on a treadmill causing damage. I would advise not to change much about your shoes but to concentrate on you foot placement when running on a treadmill. You may find that you need to slow your pace down a little on a treadmill and concentrate on lengthening your stride.

Message: I just have to ask -- did you land in the water? Thank you so much. I will try that tonight. I think that my stride is somewhat shorter on the treadmill in order to keep up with the belt.

Message: The first time I landed in the Water, the second time I had a successful landing on the shore. I hope everything works out. If that doesn't work you may want to run with a slight incline on the treadmill. It will help you open your stride.

Message: Thanks for the suggestion. I have had less problems since widening my stride and paying closer attention to how I am placing my feet.
