Discussion: Discovered new training aid for run segment

Subject: Discovered new training aid for run segment

Message: The secret is to start running on a new track and never ask anyone exactly how many laps is one mile. Just estimate off of your own experience. Then you will run for a month (40 miles) before stumbling across the fact that the track is 8 laps a mile instead of the 10 you thought it was. All of a sudden your pudgy and very frustrating 9-10 minute mile pace, becomes a decent 7-8 min mile pace. Not only does this strategy push you to run faster, it pushes you to run farther. And magically when it comes to race day you will notice an amazing 2 minute drop in run times even though you just got done swimming and biking!

Lol I'm sure I'm not alone, but I thought it was pretty funny when I figured out that no I wasn't really that out of shape. (And my sudden flare up of ITB synd. makes more sense when I did a 9.5 mile run the 3rd week of training when I haven't run in 6 months).

And if anyone is curious why I run on a track...I go to UCF. 8 laps a mile means I get to see the same feminine figure 8 times a mile *grin*. Lance arm strong has a coach pacing him, ummmm I have 'goals' to pass each lap.

Message: All the tracks I know of are 400 meters , unless its the B.S. indoor junk. Training indoors is so hamsterlike. Why not build yourself a big wheel and put in front of a Boob Tube.

Message: nice story but that can work poorly in reverse though...my water polo coach used to forget we were swimming meters and scream at us for not swimming fast enough cause he was thinking of our times in yards...not fun

Message: Gonna have to put that in my quote book ........... 'Training indoors is so hamsterlike. Why no tbuild yourself a big wheel and put in front of a Boob Tube.' ROFL Even more funny because I actually thought of how posisble it may be. Unfortunately i have no time to attempt to build a hamster wheel, no matter how funny a picture might be.

Message: Rob,... Runing is actually my weak point. I'm not bad at short distances (under 6 miles ) It seems to me alot of people develope leg, foot and joint problems especially at my age. I wish there were some swim -bike competitions with none or very little running . Us older generation would love the low impact!!! Also I love the outdoors even when the weather is bad.

Message: William,

Here's a link to the Muncie Endurathon which has a swim/bike only segment:

http://www.muncieendurathon.com/

"2006 will feature an Aqua-Bike distance in conjunction with our regular tri distance. The swim will be 1.2 miles with a 56 mile bike and the finish following the bike."
