Message: Have any of you had any problems with upset stomachs after swims? I've heard that swallowing a bit of pool water will give you the runs. Anyone know anything about this?

Message: Lol nice topic. Yes I do get issues with swimming. The pool water seems to give me some gas, either that or swallowing air as opposed to breathing it. The other thing that gives me problems is I made the mistake of drinking my meal shakes (heavy weight gainer) prior to the swim. Its not a problem for running and biking, gives me some go juice, but with the swim it really really does not sit well on the stomach. So now I do my swims first thing in the morning (7am) and don't eat anything prior. I then have my shake afterwards (after about a half hour) when my stomach is settled. Your digestive system relies on gravity to a fair extent, so anything that puts you horizontal (sleeping, swimming) interferes with it. Exercise also interferes with your digestive system which makes swimming a double hitter.

Message: I can't eat before I do a swim work out. I also swim in the AM so breakfast is not an issue. When I swam in College, my stomach would be in terrible shape following a race. I found that a spoonful of honey settled it down quickly. I guess you could use gel now.

Never had a problem with the" runs" and swimming. Now running AND swiming.... that's a different story

Message: as a competitive distance swimmer, i always knew i was at my max when i had verps towards the end of my set. Eat only after you swim, if that doesnt help take a rolaids or a prevacid or such about half an hour before you get into the pool, it should neutralize the acid a bit, basically it is the same as acid reflux.

Message:

When I was a swimmer in college I never had issues. I felt worse when I did not eat before I trained at 6am, I was also doing 2 hours every morning and afternoon. I would eat maybe a bagel, or half one before practice then a massive amount of food after. I couldn't keep weight on really, I averaged a weight loss of about 30lbs over the course of the season
