Message: Hi. I would like to do the same tri I did last year in April. I didn't train for the last one, just went out. This year, I would like to do better.

However, I am in the navy and currently underway. I have access to treadmills and stationary bikes. we will be back in port around mid February, and I do have a week in Jan where we'll be home. The race is April 23.

Swimming is my weakest area.....

That said......I am a runner. Not fast, but I have a solid base.

How detrimental would not swimming be to my program if I can't do it until almost 2 months before the race????

How should I tailor my training??

Please help, I am so new at this......

Thank you!!!!!!!!

Message: Hi Xanthe,

Wow...it's tough enough to train for a tri with all the equipment.

For swimming, I would focus on resistance training...have your workout in close relation to the actual movement...for example, don't do shoulder presses, do reverse cable flys. If you have no weights or machines available to you, then I suggest getting some resistance cords. They sound like they wouldn't be effective, but I use them for warming up when I cannot get in the water before a tri.

For biking, I'd continue to run to maintain endurance, however I'd also incorporate some squats...use your own body weight and up the reps as necessary. Once you can do 50 reps then add a little weight. If you do have a stationary bike, then I would recommend, after a 20 min. warm up, single leg pedal strokes for 20 reps and build that up each leg with a min or so of easy pedaling. Also do some low cadence/high gear pedaling.

Most important is to stretch....I cannot stress this enough, at any age......STRETCHING is your friend and will help prevent injuries in the future.

Good Luck! Roland
