Message: Friday and Saturday, I was on a 4 person team to ride the Tejas 500 time trial. We began at 6 AM on Friday and our goal was to finish by 1 PM saturday. We would each ride 40 miles and then hand off to a team mate. This event was part of the Texas Time trials. There were 4 separate races. A 500 mile RAAM qualifier, a 24 hour RAAM qualifier, a 12 hour race and a 6 hour race. Teams were not in the running to qualify for RAAM. The course consisted of a hilly 20.2 mile loop near Cleburne,TX with about 1000 ft of climbing per loop. Ya gotta admire those solo 500 milers (5 qualified for RAAM) who basically had 25,000 ft of climbing over the race.

Being on a 4 person team made the race a bit more manageable for me. 140 miles in 30 hours, 2 hours of sleep. I rode at 10:30 AM for 60 miles (one of the team was running late from work so I did and extra lap), 7PM, 1 AM and 5 AM and 12 Noon. Fastest lap was 64 minutes in the middle of the night( night time riding ROCKS) slowest was 78 minutes which was the last of loop of the initial 60. Most were 67 to 70 minutes.
There were racers from 16 states and 4 foreign countries.

Two things impressed the heck out of me. The winner of the 6 hour race was a 60 year old tri guy with probably minus 4% body fat. He won the race overall with an average speed of 22 MPH. OUCH!
The second was a group of riders who rode the 24 hour race. They had two man teams and didn't ride quite as fast as the studs. They averaged about 13 MPH up and down the hills for 24 hours all thought the night. They were paraplegic and rode Hand cycles! What an inspiration! These guys were great. They had forearms the size of small trees. They are trying to qualify for RAAM and a documentary was being filmed during the race.

Oh yeah, We missed our goal by two minutes. We had a couple times the next rider overslept his call and it would take 10 minutes to get ready to roll. Next time, Alarm clocks for everybody!
