Message: Ok - just read Andy's DNF (??) experience and that really makes me nervous. Just 20 days (Oct 23) until my first half iron man. How about tapering for this distance - I am scared to let up at all. I imagine the entire thing will take me more than 7 hours and that is a very long time to be exercising (it is a day at work for goodness sake) - what about nutrition/hydration - cmon guys - help me out here - I don't want to freak!
Thanks
Mary C (:

Message: Hey Mary
DNF=Did not finish...Don't freak. I wasn't prepared and when I quit it was over 100 degrees. I think loading up the night before, and WAY before you race in the morning. I took in almost 800 cal on the bike. TOO MUCH!! And used Accelerade, which I like, but I think water should have been mixed in as well. I had a buddy who just did a 1/2 in No. Cali. and he weighs 260 lbs for God's sake. He hit 8:00:00 on the nut. You can do this! I'm waiting for my 1/2 till next Oct. then on to Full Ironman Distance in April '07.
Go Long or Go Home!!
Just Go Mary

PS
I tapered and did almost nothing the last 5 days before the race. I was well rested and felt great.

Message: MARY,
Most every one feels some anxiety before trying something new and challenging. Isn't that part of the fun? I don't imagine your trying to win the whole thing so just go out and do your best. I have not even set a goal for a half IM. I admire you and Andrew for the dedication it takes to train for such an event. It sounds like Andrew ran into a little bad luck with the weather. This site has a multi-event training guide that includes tapering schedules. You may want to take a look at this for help, if you have not already done so.
Mary, I wish you the best of luck. I'll pray for your safety and stamina.
FEEL THE FEAR, DO IT ANYWAY!

Message: Mary,

I have been watching your training log; you are prepared!!! Even if you did no training between now and the race, you will be fine. If your goal is to win overall or even win you age group, a taper is important. If you goal is to finish it is not.

Break your race into 5 segments, the swim, T1, the bike, T2 and the run. Think of each segment as its own race; after you finish one, go to the next.

You are a strong, well prepared and motivated triathlete. You will be fine.

I am glad I am not your competition.

Let us know how it goes.

God speed.

Andy

Message: Mary, everybody is nervous the first time they try something new. As for Andrew, I think he must be talking about the Carlos O'Brien Tri at Lake Pleasant. I did the relay with some friends out there and it was HOT AS HELL, they ran of water (be glad you got some when you did). Andrew learned from his DNF and think that actually counts for a lot. If he wants to do an IM in 07 then finding out that he needs more H2O and less Accelerade is a pretty important thing. If you trainined well, you will be fine. If stuff happens and you aren't able to finish, I am sure you will learn from the experience and move on. There are worse thinks in the world than a DNF.
