| Discussion: My First DNF | |
Subject: My First DNF By: Andrew Shetter Written on: 2005-10-03 17:33:22 Message: Here'e the deal. 8 am start...already 90 degrees. Maybe 85. I had a GREAT SWIM! 1500 m in 34 minutes (great for me anyway.) The 1st 12.5 mile loop on the bike wasn't too bad. Lot's of hills. Back to the turnaround then up a hill....2nd 12.5 miles Not So Good...finished in a blazing (not) 1 hour 36 minutes. Start the run on a hill..uphill. made it almost a mile to the first water station...things aare getting blurry now. Stop for water, on me and in me. Take about 30 paces and drop...right in the middle of the road. I still have my wits about me enough to realize all that water is gonna come up. So I make it to the side of the road and......well....you know. So I admit defeat....DNF. my first, so forgive me for being emotional. My goal is the Arizona Ironman in '07, I never thought I'd go DNF. Everyone was very helpful and supportive getting me back to the transition area though. Some guy just jumped up from the spectators and walked with me, someone else gave me water. I truly think those were God moments. I would have fainted if neither one of those things happened. We found another member of my team and she got her husband (our team leader and a Chrio Sports Doc.) and he cooled me down and took care of me. we discussed it later that evening and determined that it was most likely a combination of TOO MANY calories for that distance and not enough hydration. I write this not for sympathy, but for education. I never thought this could happen. I will continue to race but with a better nutrition/hydration plan. I will know when to quit because it's happened.
