Message: Here'e the deal. 8 am start...already 90 degrees. Maybe 85. I had a GREAT SWIM! 1500 m in 34 minutes (great for me anyway.) The 1st 12.5 mile loop on the bike wasn't too bad. Lot's of hills. Back to the turnaround then up a hill....2nd 12.5 miles Not So Good...finished in a blazing (not) 1 hour 36 minutes. Start the run on a hill..uphill. made it almost a mile to the first water station...things aare getting blurry now. Stop for water, on me and in me. Take about 30 paces and drop...right in the middle of the road. I still have my wits about me enough to realize all that water is gonna come up. So I make it to the side of the road and......well....you know. So I admit defeat....DNF. my first, so forgive me for being emotional. My goal is the Arizona Ironman in '07, I never thought I'd go DNF. Everyone was very helpful and supportive getting me back to the transition area though. Some guy just jumped up from the spectators and walked with me, someone else gave me water. I truly think those were God moments. I would have fainted if neither one of those things happened. We found another member of my team and she got her husband (our team leader and a Chrio Sports Doc.) and he cooled me down and took care of me. we discussed it later that evening and determined that it was most likely a combination of TOO MANY calories for that distance and not enough hydration. I write this not for sympathy, but for education. I never thought this could happen. I will continue to race but with a better nutrition/hydration plan. I will know when to quit because it's happened.

I can feel you disappointment. I have felt that same disapointment and take solice in a quote from Teddy Roosevelt my older sister sent me after I had a disappointing race in the 80's.

It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

I am certainly not as eloguent as Mr. Roosevelt, but will leave you with this.
Learn from what did not work, avoid it in the future and remember, you are not one of the timid souls, your face is marred by dust and sweat and blood. You are the doer of deeds and you should take comfort that you put your toe on the line and responded when the gun sounded.

Remember, what does not kill us makes us stronger.

Message: Andrew! WOW...that takes a lot of pride to admit...i'm proud of you! I & the heat NOT friends! I over heat just standing in the heat morr less playing in it...a great site to check out is the propel.com they have a built in hydrate log-in system which guides you (AND THEY BELEIVE) is good for REhydration; while & during your training...You know Andrew all in all it's NOT about DNF but about living & learning for the "NOW" & "the future"...Great Job buddy! I'm right behind you-future 1/2 IM 2008! Martie Marie ;0)
