Message: Hello I'm in Alpharetta and I'm training for my 1st triathlon. I'ev taught myself to swim a little , but my technique needs some major help!!

If anyone in the area is available for lessons, I'd love to take them. I can get you a Bally's pass if you need one.

Thanks

Message: HI-
I don't live in your area however I am a swim coach so I will give you some tips for your beginning swimming. First you need to make sure that you body lays in a neutral position in the water- Meaning that you don't want your legs sinking, or your upper body sinking. 2nd work on your kick, most new swimmers kick like they are riding a bike, that is incorrect. You need to kick from your hip, keep your knees straight (a slight natural bend is o.k) and point your toes slightly-keep your legs relaxed and use a kick board to do some kicking.

AS for your arms. I always tell my new swimmers to move your arms like a windmill- don't stop. Make sure that you are pulling down the center of your body and not out to the sides (waste of energy). Your strokes should be long, make sure you are reaching way out in front of you and dig deep into the water. Longer stronger strokes are much more efficient than short choppy quick strokes.

AS for breathing- You want to breathe into your arm pit. As your arm is coming out of the water that is when you are turning your head to the side to breathe. There is a pocket of air there. Keep your head in a neutral position- try to keep the water line at your hair line on your forehead.

Any questions please feel free to ask. I've been swimming since I was 4 years old, swam through High School and College and now I am coaching. Hopefully I can help you through typing!!

Suzanne

Message: Oh Suzanne thanks so much for the reply. You'd be amazed... all the sits I've gone to for swim help, haven't offered as much basic advice as you gave.

BTW do you recommed that I skip the nose clips? Getting H20 in my nose is one of my biggest probs right now.

Message: If the water going in your nose is truly a hinderance to you and it is affecting you making progress with your stroke then go ahead and get the nose plugs, they actually make nose plugs for races- so try and find that type of a nose plug.

Sorry so late in getting back to you- I've been on vacation for 2 weeks. Hope your training is going well. let me know if you have any other questions or if you are running into any problems.

Suzanne
