Subject: swim By: mary castellucci Written on: 2005-05-31 09:56:33 Message: I am a good swimmer and I can endure, but I am so slow. It takes me 6 min to swim 250 yards...and that is in a pool. I went to a lake this past Sat where the half iron man will be held in Oct and I get nervouse and off course..so it take me even longer in open water. Any suggestions. How do we know if we can wear wet suits and will it help me relax in the open water so I can swim straighter. I keep wanting to breast stroke when I begin to get nervous.

Subject: RE: swim By: Andy Mixell Written on: 2005-06-01 08:43:09 Message: Mary, Even the best swimmers have a difficult time swimming a straight line in the open water. The most important thing do is to stay relaxed, if you get nervous your stroke will fall apart and your swim will be misreable. On each leg of the swim pick a landmark like a buoy or a building on shore as a reference and then pick up your head and reorient your position to that landmark. I count 8 strokes which is what it takes me to swim 25 yards in the pool. If it makes you feel more comfortable, take 8-10 strokes and then swim a couple strokes of breast stroke reorienting yourself to the landmark you have chosen. Before too long you will be swimming straighter. Remember to stay relaxed. With regards to wet suits, check with the race director, they will be able to tell you if they are legal in your race. Good Luck. | |
Subject: thanks and more questions By: mary castellucci Written on: 2005-06-03 21:10:27 Message: Thanks for your helpful replies. I have a goal of a half iron man in October. I have done several small (500, 12, 3) and I have run 7 marathons. I have read a lot of different information about training for this type of race. I joined a running club two years and it has really helped me with my long runs. Is this what I should do for the 1/2 IM. I am not much of a biker. I have been out for a couple of 30 miles rides by myself the last couple of weeks but I go in a loop as I am a bit nervous to venture to far out by myself. Thanks again. I was also going to hire a coach, but I believe this website may just see me through.
