Discussion: Just embarking upon my first Triathlon

Message: I'm a longtime runner (which I thoroughly enjoy!), and am moderately good at marathons with my PR just under 3:30. Since the last marathon I ran a couple weeks ago, I've been experiencing some lagging knee pain on my last few runs. Some friends have recommended that I should train for and do one triathlon per year because the cross-training will help my knee heal (and prevent further injuries) and help keep me in shape.
I'm still trying to navigate the site and figure out a starting point for all this, so I'll apologize in advance if these are silly questions. Is there a fall triathlon that anyone would recommend for me (Eastern US)? How should I begin locating a reasonable training schedule for myself? Can anyone recommend a good resource? I have a mountainbike. Is that good enough for triathlon training?

Message: Here are some helpful places for you to start looking for what you need and hopefully some answers to your not-so-silly questions:

1) www.trifind.com has a list of a BUNCH of triathlons and duathlons all year long.

2) I use the trainer on this site to give me an idea of what I should be doing. I modify it quite a bit seeing as how I'm just a teeny bit obsessive during tri season. All you have to do is click on trainer and click on change my training plan and you should be up and going.

3) There are all kinds of triathlon books out there. I suggest getting one or two that sound like they fit what you're looking for. Trifind advertises TONS of book resources.

4) We have an ongoing conversation right now about the wisdom of using a mountain bike. Basically, you CAN use a mountain bike, but if you want to WIN, you would have to be superathlete with a mountain bike. Check in to renting a road bike the weekend before the race (to get used to the feel and shifting) and the weekend of the race. It'll cost you, but not as much as buying one! =o) BTW, I've only done one triathlon, but I used a mountain bike...several 10 year olds passed me, and I didn't pass ANYBODY! =o)

I hope this was helpful!
