| Discussion: heart rate training | |
Subject: heart rate training By: josh h. Written on: 2006-06-27 14:11:38 Message: I read and have been following the training recomendations of "breakthrough triathlon training", by Brad Kearns. He really promotes running at 80% max heart rate for base training. Essentially you will be able to run faster after you build a strong "engine" or cardio base. However, I am literally crawling after mile 3. Either I am completely out of cardio shape or my polar HM is screwed up. My mild slow step jog has me passing 80% max heart rate in a jiffy. I am jogging at a ten minute pace when I feel like I can rund at an 8.5 mile pace comfortably. Any advice from HM trainers or people who read Brad's book would be much appreciated .

Subject: RE: heart rate training By: Tim O. Written on: 2006-06-27 16:04:51 Message: Josh, I don't have Brad Kearns book however I hope that you aren't using a formula for determing your max heart rate(220-age). I always go by Joel Friels way of doing it and using that as my gauge. My issue is that I was on a swim team from when I was 10-17 and that has given me a real low resting heart rate and operating HR. I would suggest that you get tested to find out what your max HR really is or better yet what your LTHR is and then go from there. Or check out Joe Friels book from the library on Tri Training. It has the method for determining your LTHR in there.
