I am just starting a kick for triathlons. I am thinking of joining TNT come their December training season. I would have LOVED to join this summer but I just graduated college and need to situate myself in the real world first before I get myself involved in such an undertaking (fundraising and complete physical commitment!)
I have been running and biking on and off for the last couple years now, no span longer than a couple months solid. I am REALLY excited to get into this sport but am a little nervous about the swim. I am just coming off a knee injury that kept me out of running for the last couple months, BUT ran for 55 minutes yesterday and was SHOCKED that i still have the stamina!
All in all, blah blah, haha. But i would really appreciate any words of wisdom that yall experienced tri's have that would keep me motivated for this Sprint I have Aug 20th.
Any special tips for training (I am following the schedule given to me by this website), nutrition (Runner's world had a great ariticle in it's July Issue about Triathlons!), or equipment (have yet to purchase ANYTHING, looking iinto a road bike this month, and great running shoes asap!)

Subject: RE: First Sprint in the mix ... any advice for training, equip, nutrition? By: Jose G. Written on: 2006-06-27 13:26:02 Message: Yo Billy, just completed my first Tri (sprint) this weekend. Swimming has been a hard one for me to get down, especially the breathing.
My advice, get with a few peeps who can get you started, work with a swim coach to keep you away from any bad habits, and swim 2-3 times per week, no less. I am working with a USAT Level1 Tri coach whose passion is swimming and will start doing open water training swims later this summer.
Don't make my mistake and plunge into an open water swim as your first open water experience. ooh, not cool. Could hardly make it down a 25yd stretch in early May and just put two good 250yd performances together last night (0:5:30 minutes each).
For the bike: scrounge the internet for a good road bike (craigslist over eBay). Look for a bike swap in town. Denver has one in the fall and is where I picked up my very fast bike for $800. Hook up with a good local bike shop (LBS) and get fited BEFORE buying a bike. This way you will know what to look for and what NOT to look for. Leaves the tri-frames alone for know and get into a good raod frame.
For running shoes: Without knowing your particular run style and given your knee injury, I would suggest to invest the time, energy and funds getting shoes from a running store. The good ones have tread mills with video cameras and can help analyze your step (pronate vs supinate). They will also help you choose between a good training shoes versus race day shoe.
As you can tell, I am all about getting face to face with someone. My favortire running store and LBS all know me by name and are surprised I don't fill out an application. The rest is up to you, tour training, and helpful advice from the internet.
Have fun this summer, can't wait to get see your race results get posted. Think you can squeeze a sprint tri in this fall? Pool swim would be a good start.
