Message: I finished my firsts tri, the New Balance 1/2 IM (Victoria, B.C., Canada) last Sunday. I immediately caught a plane to Alaska and the Yukon (for work ;-). I missed the ontri team last week so I thought I would file a report today.

Here is the race report line(600 racers):

465 272/314 M 20/23 M5054 6:19:51 Barry McKee (swim)592 1:04:23 530 4:28 (bike)280 3:09:02 29.2 495 4:17:53 560 3:45 (run)383 1:58:14 9:31 Victoria,BC

Anyone who caught my report pre-race will recall my anxiety over the swim. Well it just about did me in. I was close to stopping with 200 M left in the swim. I was a mess....vomitting in the water, the works. I told the race officials that I was done. Just before the support boat arrived to pull me from the water I looked at my watch, looked at the finish line and I said "I'm going for it. I can't quit"!! The rest of the race was cool. I knew going in that my bike was my strength, and it was. My 1/2 marathon training and racing paid off too.

I discovered a lot about myself that day. A defining moment in my athletic life. I heading back to the pool to get stronger. I will definately do another tri. I think a marathon in the fall.... For all you 50 year old kids out there, you know how I feel. I'm not going to dispense advice. I think we all have to find inner strength to pull us through the rough bits, both in life and in sport. I've had fun being part of the ontri team. I will definately join again when I start my training for my next race. I'm going to do some bike racing this summer so I will be leaving ontri, but only for awhile. Good luck to all of you and thanks again for the support. Live your dreams. Be kind to yourself. And, trust your training.....

Barry

Message: Way to hang in there during the swim, Barry. My gosh, vomiting in the water must have been kind of scary at the time, but you finished it! Good luck with your bike racing this summer. Look forward to seeing you back in the fall.

Message: Barry,

Way to pull yourself back together after the vomiting episode, that must have been terrifying.
Hope your bike race season goes well.

Swimming is a good recovery workout from your hard bike ride days.
We'll look for your posts next tri season,

Ron
