Message: Hey all,
so here' s my experience of the subaru tri that Teresa and Liz also attended:

It begins cold and rainy. I find a spot for my bike in T, near a tree and across from the portapotties so that I can find it again (learned that lesson last year). I wrap my running shoes in plastic so they will be dry, I fiddle with my gatorade, and then I am out, in the cold. I ate a yogurt and Larabar at 6--but my wave didn't start till 8:15...That would've been ok, but I stood shivering, literally, for 2 hours before we got to swim...
I don't have a whole lot of extra reserves on me, so what I had, fuel wise, was gone before my toes touched the water. Nothing I could do about it, I thought. Just go. It's not that long and there's sugar in the cytomax, so drink it up whenever it's offered!
The swim: To avoid the pitfalls of last year (being nailed in the chin by heels in front of me, getting stuck in a pack of people not actually swimming, etc), I went near the front, and all the way to the left, away from teh rope. I breatstroke at a decent clip for a BS, but not as fast as a good freestyle by any means. This time, I ended up kicking a few folks behind me instead of getting kicked myself--sorry! to you guys if you read this! really! I didn't mean to! I will swim faster next time! Anyway, I swerved way out, to avoide the two people in wetsuits---the way they felt in the water next to me was very disconserting--not the same bouyancy or something. LIke swiming with something not-human. So, I vered way off course, wasting some time.
Also, somehow forgot my long fast stroke, and wasted time and energy doing little fast strokes. Don't know what happened there...think I panicked.
Ran out of the water, ran the 1/4 mile to T1, all was well....don't konw what happened with teh time...it looks like I must have had a martini break there...took forever. Ran my bike to the jump line, jumped on and had a great bike in the pouring rain. The corners slowed me down, but the rest felt like flying. It was beautiful with the water spinning up and off the wheels of the person speeding in front of me...the and the drops splashing off my helmet. I love rain. Truly. Mostly going 20-21 MPH. So, that felt great.
Since I usually panick on the run, my goal was to know I can do the run (since my long ones now are 10 miles) and not hold back on the bike.
oops. Might've worked if i'd had enough fuel and my muscles hadn't frozen solid before...
I went to run and my knees felt like ice cubes, my chronic ankle injury (I essentially have ripped through the FHL and other tendons on the inside of my ankle) was killing me and I felt like a lead weight. ..I couldn't find my pace or my breath and decided to walk a minute and a woman ran by me, ran back, grabbed my arm and said, "You're too fit to be walking...get running!" and threw me foward. Thanks! I didn't walk again...ran the rest, but slower than I wanted to.
Finished all in 1:32.
I Had a lot of fun, learned a lot--like that it's a RACE, so I can pass people who are going slower than me, I don't have to wait patiently behind them! Duh. But I never realized it before! Also, bring more FUEL! Just in case you burn it all up freezing....Also, brick training, brick training, brick training, and brick training are crucial!!
Thanks to everyone for the prerace support and advice...now I aim for one oly next month and the 1/2 IM in sept!

Message: Maggie,

Congrats on a great race. I wish I knew what you looked like so I could have looked out for you there, I got a couple good pictures of Teresa. You girls all showed lots of guts and determination to complete the event with the conditions. It wasn't a very nice day out but you all did so well. Once again congrats and good luck on all of your future Tris...

Jeff

Message: Way to go. Learn to burn smart. Good finishing time for a sprint and hopefully you will take the smarts to the Oly next month. Fuel for the Oly and 70.3 will be crucial so start practicing fueling now with your training so it is second nature.
Tim

Message: What a day! I've never considered what it must be like "sans wetsuit" in a group of wetsuit swimmers. Interesting.

Great bike speed - especially in the rain! As a dedicated Oregonian, I too rather like the rain, and kind of hope I get to race in it at some point.

How cool was it for that lady to come back for you? I love that!

Great job - thanks for the story. As Tim said, work on that fuel. Better to have extra in your T area than not enough...

Message: I enjoyed reading your report AND cracked up when I read about those aliens in wet suits ... sometimes I feel that way myself. The most important thing is that you finished (literally dragged into finishing) but whatever the method ... YOU DID IT !!!

Message: Had a fuel problem yesterday as well. Quads locked up in the run. But at least you ran out. I had a full bottle of GU and two gel pack in my jersey that I didn't touch just to catch up on time lost in the swim. Big mistake. M brick workouts are now the first thing on my mind.

Anywho, looks like you still had a good race at 1:32. Sound as if this was a good prep for the Oly.

Message: Great report, I loved the comment about the aliens in the water. We get wrapped up on how we feel ourselves that we forget everyone else out there too, but sharing your experience makes gives us all pointers for the next one. Pam

Message: Nice account of the race, Maggie. I like what you said about riding the bike in the rain. I was also riding in the rain this past weekend and I swear I would rather ride in the rain than in dry weather. But, anyway, I'm glad you had a good race and good luck in your training for the OLY later. Sounds like you learned a lot.

Marty

Message: Hey Maggie!

Give yourself a break. You smoked my time....lol. 1:51:22. I also loved the bike. It did feel like flying out there. I hated the swim. It doesn't seem to get any better the more I do it.. I still feel panicked when people are around me, bumping me or just swimming too close. I too panick in the run, but this time, like you, I have been doing longer runs so I know I can finish the 5k. I just have to relax and do what I know I can do. I can't say that I did that though.. Isn't that T1 a bear?! I asked Ron how do you run after a cold swim and your legs feel like lead? Gotta work on more bricks too. Gotta get to Chicago and swim with you in the big lake. I am doing Schaumbeg sprint tri on July 9th and plan to really cut down my times. Good luck to you in your Oly, is that the Chicago accenture? I will plan to spectate you.
Teresa

Message: Great story Maggie! I loved your RR. It's not often we have cooler weather down here in FL, but I can definitely relate with not having enough fuel. I never used to carry gel or anything on me, even during a (very slow) marathon, but I think the Tri's take more out of you all over, every muscle is using some so it seems to burn out faster.

Great times... and glad you enjoyed it!
