Message: I slept better than expected and got up at 5:00am. When I awoke the rains had stopped but the grounds were wet. I got to transition around 6 and while I was setting up they made an announcement that the swim was cancelled due to too much debris (sticks, logs, etc) in the water from the rains. We were then informed that they would substitute a 5k for the swim and we'd still go off in our swim waves. The race started with the pro's at 6:50 followed by the age groupers. I decided to take the 5k easy since it was very humid and my body would be taking an unintended pounding from the additional run. From the run it was a smooth transition in T1 and onto the bike course which is very technical and hilly and winds through beautiful Fairmount park. Some of the hills had the competitors walking their bikes because of the
steep grades. Near the end of the bike I felt a twinge in my quads which usually indicates the onset of cramping. I had another smooth transition in T2 and began the run. Shortly into the run the twinging in my thighs started to increase so I decided to ease my pace and refuel at the water stations with Gatorade Endurance and GU. After replenishing and settling into a relaxed pace the twinging decreased and became almost non existent at about mile 4 where I began to pick up the pace which carried me to the finished line. I was surprised at the amount of competitors that pulled up during the 10k because of cramping. Although the swim was cancelled it was still a great race and I highly encourage anyone who enjoys Olympic distance to consider Philly next year. The race was won by pro Dave Thompson in 1:48.

Here are my splits:
5k run: 23:46
T1: 2:05
40k bike: 1:15
T2: 2:10
10k run: 55:44
Total time: 2:39

Message: Great race Jay!
You have excellent self control to be able to keep that cramp from kicking in.

Message: Good job with the 10k run. My quads turned into concrete blocks on the run this past weekend so I admire your on-course recovery. Hope to do an Oly next year so fuel management will be important. Good job!

Message: Great job! I would have flipped out if they told me I had to run a 5K instead of swimming. You really seem to be connected with what's going on with your body. That's so important during these races. Nice job.
