Subject: 1st Tri - 2nd Place by Age (kinda)

Message: So here's goes my story. First Tri (My Way or the Tri Way) and it is one where you get to pick the order. Cool format lot's o fun. I went traditional and sucked donkey balls, hard.

Downed a GU pack before the swim.

The swim went as expected then got worse. Am really working on freestyle swimming but the cold water didn't let me catch my breath (sans wetsuit). Started beathing hard and short breaths. Ended up doing the lake crawl the full 800yds. BUT I DID NOT GIVE UP.

The bike was my sweet precious AND eventual downfall. To make up time just went all out. 14 mile out and back, 7 miles up hill, 7 miles down. Passed up a dozen cyclist going up and another dozen on the way down. Even stopped to help someone change a flat just after the turn around. They didn't have the slightest idea of bicycle maintenance and I just couldn't ride past them. I didn't feel my time was anywhere competitative, so what was there to lose. Hopped back on the bike and raced down the hill. Registration: $60, A few packests of GU :$3.00, racing down a straight road at 46mph in the aero: Priceless! SO focused on making up time, i didn't even touch the GU pack in my bottle.

The run: This is where where the bike ride bit me. About a quarter mile into the 4 mile loop the quads decided enough was enough, no mas, finitio. Spent the next 3.75 miles switching between a light jog and quick walk. BUT I DID NOT GIVE UP.

I think my time ended up around 2:15 but didn't have the courage to check. The website is down today and results won't get posted for a few days. When they started the awards ceremony I thought it would be good to watch the accomplished and plan for the future. When they got to my age group (30-34) we were all a bit surpirsed when my name was announced as runner-up. Despite the quads, jumped up w/o hesitation to claim the goody bag and infamous red cow bell.

Next one is this Sept and am already planning my brick workouts to keep even pace throughout the event.

Quick question on race day breakfast: What works well for everyone! I had an egg sandwich with ham, glass of OJ. During the swim I felt so might all come back...Suggestions?

Message: Jose,
Wow, great race. Imagine if you hadn't stopped to help the flat, you prob would have won your age group. But stoppiing to help someone is more of what the sport is about than the winning. I am proud of you and you sleep better when you do something nice. Kick butt next time and take home the whole thing.

As for breakfast. I heard that you eat what you always eat before training. Don't change anything. I usually have eggs too with rice... that is what Lance Armstrong had for breakfast every day of the Tour de France for seven victories.. I figure its good enough for him.. its good enough for me.

Teresa

Message: Nice work Jose --

That sounds like a fun tri. plus, you made a large deposit in the Karma Bank -- to be withdrawn at a later race -- when you stopped to help another racer. Congrats on placing.

Paul

Message: Congratulations! Way to stick with the race when things got tough! On your breakfast question, I eat what I generally eat all week: cereal with a good combination of carbs and protein with soymilk (regular milk works good too, but the lactose sometimes gives me cramps). One thing you might want to watch out for it the acidity in the orange juice. It can agrivate any type of heart burn, acid reflux, or even just nervous stomaches. When your nervous and producing stomach acid anyways, you may not want to add more. Adding a little more bread, cereal, carbohydrate, etc can help to absorb some of that acid which can make you feel like you're breakfast is about to come back up. Nice job, keep up the good work!

Message: Nice job Jose! It's incredible that you stopped to help someone out along the way. Not many would.

46mph? "Faster than a speeding bullet!" And in the aero position no less...yikes. What a great job!

I'm with Katie on the OJ. It's okay for some, but many find the acid combative during exertion. I always have the same thing - a toasted bagel with PB&J, much water, and some fruit (apples and/or bananas). Usually just the bagel for breakfast about 2 hours prior to the run or tri, whatever. Then a piece of fruit every hour or so. I like a little GU 10-15 minutes before the race.

Congratulations again!

Message: Ron, something of a doggie paddle / freestyle with head above water combination. My goggles fogged up and couldn't see squat so just put them on my swim cap. Quite embarrasing as far as triathlon swim performances go.

Dan, love the Mt Hood SCramble photo posting....

Dan and Katie: Good call switching from OJ. I am lucky to never know what heart burn is but did feel a bit on the nervous side that morning.

Message: Jose,
That is really unreal you hit 46 on the bike! That's certainly making up time. Also really cool that you helped some people with a flat, can't imagine you see that often in a race.

Message: Geoff: Thank goodness for a bike computer to figure out the max speed. If I had looked down while in the heat of the sprint, MAJOR SPILLAGE!. Only noticed it when I went to unrack for the day. Big grin walking back to the car.

Message: Kudos for stoping to help out on the bike. Word of caution though, some races you are not allowed outside assistance, even from another competitor. Sounds like you had a good/bad experiance for your first. Reflect on the good and learn from the bad.
