Discussion: Bike training question

Subject: Bike training question

Message: I have another question for you experienced triathletes....

When you have a "recovery" ride planned, is it better to:

a) maintain a high cadence in an easier gear,
b) stay in a slightly harder to push gear but slow down the cadence, or
c) both (easier gear and slower cadence)

Also, what kind of cadence do you try to maintain in your training rides and races? I'm trying to work on keeping my cadence up. 80 - 85 is pretty comfortable and easy for me to maintain, at least on the flats, but I feel like I should be trying to keep it a little higher (90 or so).

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jenny

Message: Jenny, I used to bike race and our coach would always keep us up above 85RPM regardless of the effort. For recovery days he used to have us spin 95-100 in an easier gear, 39x14, 15. His philosophy was "spin to win" . Also, being comfortable with a higher cadence will help you with the bike to run transition as well.

I still maintain my bike coaches philosophy and spin 95+ most of the time. The only time I am below this is when I may be doing Muscle Tension Intervals which is a completely different workout.

Spin to win and keep the rubber side down.
