| Discussion: Hip Pain | |
Subject: Hip Pain By: Jeffrey H. Written on: 2006-06-26 00:21:02 Message: About three weeks ago during a long bike ride at about mile 40, my right hip socket started to hurt on the posterior side slightly. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the worst, it was around a 2 or 3. The pains continued after the ride and may have even worsened for a day and then gradually subsided but not completely go away. On my next ride about four days later on a short ride, the same pain returned after about 5 miles. The pain was more severe when I was exerting increased down force on the pedal. I was able to complete the ride but I was really babying my right leg. The next day, my right hip felt as if it was popping when I walked. This lasted for several hours and after taking some Tylenol, it did feel a little better and the popping seemed to have stopped. The strangest thing, the next day I ran (probably against my better judgment) and the hip didn’t hurt and if anything felt better after the run like it tightened up the joint.

Subject: RE: Hip Pain By: Michael M. Written on: 2006-06-26 14:31:06 Message: I had the same pain except it was when I ran...After seeing an orthopedic he said it was bursitis. The fix for me was rest and plenty of stretching before any kind of exercise.

Subject: RE: Hip Pain By: Jeffrey H. Written on: 2006-06-27 11:11:02 Message: Thanks Ron and Mike. I did a little research on bursitis and I think you're right, Mike. The symptoms described are exactly what I'm experiencing. I also learned that one is more prone to bursitis if they have RA. I'm going to take Ron's suggestion and move my seat forward a 1/2 inch to see if relieves any stress. Sometimes I do find myself riding more forward on the seat than I probably should be causing me not to be resting on my "sit" bones enough. If that doesn't help after a couple of rides I'll move it back and raise it a 1/2 inch. I'm just a little nervous about throwing the bike fit off to much. If it still doesn't get better, I'll go see my Rheumatologist about getting a corticosteroid shot.

Subject: RE: Hip Pain By: Josh T. Written on: 2006-06-27 12:08:16 Message: You also might want to check the float in your pedals. Many people have hip pain when riding because the do not get enough float (the normal action of the foot moving from side to side) with their pedals. If you are using SPD'S there is very little float and if you have any abnormality in your pedal stroke it will put pressure on your IT band. This pain can either be seen in youron the lateral side of your knee or on your hip form the lateral side sliding around to the posterior. The best pedal to use for float are the speed play pedals or a look type pedal where you can adjust the float. Most of the time when your seat is to far forward or back you will first see pain on the top of the knee or on the patellar tedon. If you go to your local bike shop they should be able to help you find a good pedal that will let your foot move through its normal motion while pedaling.
