Message: Hi all- well I did it, back issues and all! Had a blast but really disappointed in my results. Suppose it could have been worse given I just got in the pool and on the bike 6 weeks ago for the first time since I was a kid. I know I was just aiming to finish and to have this be practice for the Olympic, I guess my competitive nature and type A personality is just getting the best of me. Will have to work on that too

All in all, everything went well. Ate properly, hydrated fine, slept pretty ok and prepared gear very well. Checklist was the savior (thanks all!). Was so excited and not even nervous, to my surprise. Seeing the course beforehand really helped me mentally prepare and I think was part of the reason I was not nervous.

Set up early, counted racks and went to the bathroom- good call! They announced that the water was too warm so no wetsuits. Anyway things were going really well and I was cruisin'- didn't flip like I thought I might. Then, DRAMA! I suppose I was just really focused and in my groove, but long story short, I missed a buoy and ended up swimming to where we got in (and was actually on the beach), instead of the exit. I just about died! They asked if I wanted to DQ and I said absoltely not. So, I had to turn around, swim all the way back out and back around the last buoy and then forward and to the real finish. Cost me at least 8 minutes. Wow. Well, you best beleive that will NEVER happen again. Oops.

Bike went well, it was pelting rain. Curves were really slow and tried not to kill myself for the run. Didn't really realize I was that slow, so will have to work in this area, but had a good time. Run was a bit tough but happy with my time. Walked through the water stations which was enough. Really slow transition times- that is something I can cut in half. Don't even know what I was doing all that time... took a quick nap or something? HA!

So, all in all a really exceptional experience. Like I said, extremely disappointed in my times but I will be bold and admit below, even though it makes me cringe. Lot of training to get to Olympic at the end of August, but a great learing experience and it's cool to be a member of your club... a real TRIATHELETE!

swim for .56 mile (I really did approx .85 with my goof)= 27.56 (adjusted for mishap= 20)
T1 5.01- (gotta cut that in half! )
Bke in the rain-14.9miles 55.4 (hmmm)
T2 4.22 (no comment)
Run 29.50- 3.12miles (ok with this)
Total: 2:02:49 15th in division out of 40; (adjusted for swim... 1:54:49)

Message: Timarie,

Congratulations on your race! I don't think your times are bad at all, especially considering all of the factors. You should be so proud of yourself for continuing after your swimming mishap!

Thanks for posting your results!

Stacie

Message: Timorie,

Way to not have a tantrum and quit after the first lap of your modified swim course.
I am sure you just wanted to practice the olympic distance swim.
You have a first race that you can look back on and smile about.
That missed turn is not 100% your fault, there should have been a kayak or other boat at the bouys to prevent what you did.

You accomplished your goal.
You did a lot of things right and learned some others. All in all a good experience.
Six weeks to triathlete , that's great.
Ron

Message: Timarie,
I think you had a great first outing. I mean come on, you swam alot more than the race, and had to bike through hard rain. Those are two big mental factors! Sounds like you are a tough cookie! Way to go!

Message: There was nothing about back pain in your RR - love to hear it (well, not hear it as the case may be...)!

Transitions are strange the first time through - it's easy to get a little lackadasical. Biking in the rain? That's tough - way to go after it. Way to go - only 6 weeks training...

Are you going to show-off next race and swim extra mileage? What an overachiever!

Sounds like a great precursor to your Oly in August - congratulations...TRIATHLETE!

Message: Timarie, way to go!!!! Be proud of yourself in having the courage to compete, not giving up regardless of what was put down in front of you. You have learned a very valuable lesson here, in that even if things go wrong just stick to your plan and work it out. That is critical, as things do and will go wrong regardless of how well you plan. So being able to react and work through issues shows your fortitude.

Way to go!!!! You have one under your belt and you will definitely do better next time with the knowledge and strenght you built by completing the first.

Best wishes !!!!
T

Message: Way to go, Timarie! Glad to hear you didn't have any more trouble with your back. I live just outside of Philly and was thinking about all the athletes competing this weekend as I watched the rain come down outside...

I'm competing in the Philadelphia Women's tri in a couple of weeks, and will be swimming in the Schuylkill as well. I was bummed to hear no wetsuits! I was hoping for a wetsuit swim for my race - oh well.... Maybe we'll have a cold snap between now and then (not likely, but a girl can dream....) How WAS the water, anyway??

Anyway, congrats on a good race - despite the weather and the extra swim distance, and with only 6 weeks training! You'll be in good shape for your Oly!

Jenny

Message: Timarie;

So, what were you doing (and eating) this time 5 years ago? Did it cross your mind during those years that you'd ever be a Triathlete or even fit and healthy? What an amazing life experience you've had. Lots of us have made changes to our lifestyles and bodies to become what we are, but not many of us have made the dramatic changes that you have.
Unbelievable job.
Brad

Message: Awesome job on the swim. Similar thing happened to the lead swimmer in my Tri this past week. He was about 50ft from shore (at the entrance) and a volunteer broke the bad news. Fortunately, he only had to swim over to the exit since he was still in the water.

While I am sure he felt some disappointment with his mental flub, I am not sure if he would have re-swam the course as you did. Good job sticking with it.

Message: Timarie,

That is awesome, congratulations on finishing your 1st Triathlon. It takes a strong person to go back out after a mistake like you had in the swim, especially on a day with so many possible excuses for you to quit or just give up. You really showed your true character, we are all proud of you, and can't wait to hear about your Olympic Triathlon later on. Great to hear that there were no back issues on race day.

Congrats,

Jeff

Message: Way to go Timarie! If you can have such a good time enduring a doubled swim, pelting rain, etc. just imagine how much fun it will be at a sunny race you run smoothly. I think your times are great. Great job!

Message: Tamarie,

Hey girlfriend, weight loss friend and triathlete friend! You did awesome. I too have to work on my T1, its so funny. My first tri, it was 9 minutes in T1, so technically I was dramatically better this time. But I just don't understand how you can run a half mile after the swim and get a good time.. How do I train for that. Anyway, I think you are great! I would have cried if I had to do the swim again, but that just shows how much grit you have. You inspire me to push my times and learn more and keep loosing weight and becoming better at everything.

Congrats!
Teresa

Message: I am SO glad to hear you were able to race -- that was scary for a while w/ the back & headaches...

As for the swim thing- I agree, it was as much the fault of the race volunteer or director for not making sure that kind of thing didn't happen... I'm SURE you weren't the only one. That is so awesome that you didn't let it throw you and you went back out and did it again. I watched a race a few weeks ago where one of the elite guys missed a turn on the bike leg and came back to transition whining and it really gave me a yucky feeling (first, that an elite would get lost on such a short course, but also that he would whine about it)... Sounds like you have what a lot of people lack, a great attitude & true sportsmanship.

And your race was in the rain too!!

Great job -- glad that you had fun!!

Message: Congrats Timarie!
I can see how easy it was to be confused in the swim, it was a little hard to follow when you were in the water. Your times are really good, especially the swim considering you had to back track all over the place.
It was really hard to navigate the turns on that course, I saw more then one person take a spill trying to cut the corners so it was well worth the extra minute or so to make sure you made it through safely!
Congrats again! Good luck in your next race!

Message: Way to go Timarie!! Nice to get that first one under the belt. Sorry to hear about the swim not going 100%, but you showed great attitude and finished it. Great job! Looks like bike and run were good for you. I feel that transition times will decrease with experience. Hey, this was the first race, so it's all about learning from it so we can make changes for the next one.

Congratulations!

Marty

Message: First, I want to thank you all for your support and words of encouragement. Couple of times I literally LOL'd, and really, all of your comments have made me realize that this is for fun, that I can't be to hard on myself, and that if I continue to stay on track, I will vastly improve over time. And, that I am not a quitter, which may even mean more that everything else. So thanks for the intentional or unintentional attitude adjustment. It was needed.

Jenny- water was actually quite nice. Didn't see any floating turds or oil slicks. Seriously, it was totally ok, although I took extra measure not to swallow any water

Brad- I was probably on my second trip to McD's getting a supersized Big Mac meal, I kid you not, on my way to sit my butt on the couch all day. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would be in a crazy race such amazing people.

Jose- thanks for the story. Don't feel as thick now!

Tereasa- as I said in my email, you inspire me too... crap, all of you guys inspire me!

Everyone else, again, thanks for your support and inspiration. I will only become a better athelete with your support. ONWARDS!

Message: Good job. The first one always hooks you in and then keeps you coming back. I think there is never as great a feeling as the one you get when you cross the finish line in a tri. And the best part is, with training, all of us will get better. Nice job and congrats. At my first tri I was nervous and the guy next to me (who had apparently done quite a few of these) said that it takes a strong person just to show up the starting line and it takes an even stronger person to finsh the race.
Great job! Can't wait to hear how your olympic goes.

Message: You've got quite a life story TinaMarie. The strength to lose all that weight, and then to become a triathlete on top it it, well I don't think getting a bit lost on your swim is anything compared the the hurdles you've endured. You inspire all of us, keep up the hard work! And I agree that someone should have been there to redirect you. That happened in my first tri--the first two waves were taken completely off course by about 1/4 mile by the current and had to redirect against the current. It was nice for us in the back to be able to plan accordingly!
