| Discussion: Raging Isle Swim RR |
Subject: Raging Isle Swim RR By: John H. Written on: 2006-06-25 21:06:14 Message: This was the Raging Isle Swim which is the first of the 4 part North Shore Swim Series. A 9 am swim start from Sunset to Ehukai (Pipeline) around 1 mile. The sun was out and very few clouds. The surf was less than 2ft but the water was still a bit cloudy. Visability remained good though.
The stragy for me was to take the inside route past the first surf break, Candyland and then angle outside of the next break, Rocky Point. The reef is shallow at Rocky's and you could see some breaks all the way in. After that I was to remain ouside and do a shallow angle towards Ehukai. I swam out about 100 yds., picked my first landmark and waited for the start.
The horn sounded and the guys started out 5 minutes behind the gals. The start line was spread out a couple hundred yards, some taking the inside route (like me) and others went outside. My sighting was dead on but unfortunatly it didn't take me far enough inside and I was a bit into the surf zone. Aside from the bubbles, it wasn't that bad. I let the waves carry me in as I crossed and when I got past the surf zone I actually had a shorter swim to get outside of Rocky Point.
After I had got to Rocky Point, the current shifted and we now swam against it. It was more of a rip current that was angling out. It got fustrating a times as I tried to adjust my angles so that I wasn't swimming directly into the current. As we got closer to Ehukai the current eased up and I began to angle in. I almost went too much when I sighted the turn bouy. I straightened up the last 200 yds to the bouy and made the left turn home. From there I used the waves to help me into shore. The shore line is deep until you hit the beach. You can stand but it makes for hard running out of the water. I got as close as I could and hoped to catch a wave onto the beach but the wave timing was off so I got up a few feet short. A short run up the sand and I was done.
Hit the shower for a quick rinse, changed and went for a short 25 min run while the other swimmers finished. Got back in time for a snack and the awards. A good race though my finish time of 36:47 for 1 mile was disappionting. I'll blame the current ;-) The next swim is the Surf & Sea Cup at Haleiwa which was my best race last year and I hope I do just as well or better this year.
Congrats to all who competed this weekend and I'll look for the RR's. Remember to keep the hips up, rubber down and the smile on.

That sounds like such a blast. I love ocean swimming.
Thanks for the report it was like a mini vacation for me.
I bet a lot of people thought you were nuts going for a run afterword.
Aloha,
Ron
