| Discussion: My first try report |
Subject: My first try report By: Tim M. Written on: 2006-06-25 09:41:32 Message: I had a lot of fun…
Early in the year one of my good old friends through a chat, on the internet, challenged me to do a sprint with him. I didn’t say yes right away, but after about a week I came to the realization I could improve my health a lot by taking on the challenge. It also really didn’t matter how I did. Yea right, you see he is an amazing runner and I could never catch up to him in a road race, but his swimming sucks and when we have mountain biked together, I could beat him also. Hmmm 2 out of 3, there could be a chance. Since that point I trained a lot. I trained more then require. I wanted to finish in a reasonable time and beat my friends. Note: he also challenged 3 other people that I knew.
I got to bed early the night before and slept all night and woke up at about 6:30 AM and had a reasonable breakfast and took off to watch the first race, a Try a Try. I had a friend in this race, so I had to be there to cheer her on. I have never seen a live Triathlon race start before and was very impressed. The first wave of this race was young kids who are just getting into the sport, 14 year olds and below. They all were incredibly aggressive at the start and could swim really well. I had a hard time spotting my friend during the race but she did reasonably well and finished in about the middle of her age group.
Note to myself, get to the race early every time. There was only 1 bike in racks for the race I was in and it made it so easy to setup. The one thing didn’t plan well enough for this event was eating a good lunch before, next time I have to look into eating better foods before the event. The sprint I was in started at 1:30, good time to get heat stroke. At about 1:00 I got my wetsuit on and went for a light swim. The lake was fantastic, it was just right for wetsuits. I was psych and getting a bit nervous at about 1:15, but I was in the 4th wave, so I had enough time to watch others start. It was time to get ready. The last couple of weeks I argued where I should start, because I am a strong swimmer. I believe I posted this question. So I was silly and took a position at the front of the swimmers a little off to the left.
The race started and I didn’t push myself in the swim, but I slowly took off with a small group of 4 individuals. I came out in 4th place realizing that there is still a long way to go. Now for the hard part the swim to bike transition. LOL it too me just under 3 mins. The bike was fun, I was passed by a few of my age group but I was trucking and had a great ride, averaging with the hills roughly 32KM/HR. The bike to run transition went extremely well. I bought laces that you don’t have to tie up. This made putting my shoes on easy. Now the part I am not great at but I ran a reasonable race. Man it was hot. I was passed by a few of my age group and finished in 16th placed out of 47. 114th out of 460 overall.
The sprint was a 750 Meter swim, 19 K ride and 5 K run.
Time: 1 Hr 18 mins
Swim: 12:28
T1: 2:53
Bike: 35:36
T2: 1:17
Run: 25:35
Wow, I am hooked.
BTW, the closes member of the challenge was 5 mins behind me.
Also, I never said this before but I was 230lbs maybe more this time last year. Now I am dropping below 180 and weight is not a concern anymore.

I too have lost alot of weight(63 LBS over past year) after starting to train for tri's. No competition here with that. I'm just enjoying the same overall health benefits! Keep it up!
