Discussion: Do the nerves ever go away?

Subject: Do the nerves ever go away?

Message: I have my first du tomorrow and am extrememely nervous, especially since I checked out the bike portion yesterday and it looks more like rolling mountains to me than hills. My goal is to finish and I am treating this race as a practice to my 'real' tri later on, but for some reason, I'm a total ball of nervous energy today. I feel like I haven't trained hard enough, long enough, etc.

Words of encouragement please!

Shelly

Message: Isn't it nice to have something to be fired up about?

You'll do fine,
Start the race taking it easy so that you always know that you will have the energy to finish strong.

Have fun with it so that you will want to get out there and du it again.
Ron

Message: Shelly good luck to you for tomorrow !
I felt the same way for my first tri... and I have a feeling I would feel the same way for the second one. It's just the passion for this sport I think.
Have fun & come back for the race report, it's always a pleasure to read story from other. :-)

Message: Shelly,

You'll do great. You've been training in the same environment that you'll be competing in -- believe it or not, you are ready for the hills. Just think about how fast you'll go when you're going down! That will help with going up.

Enjoy yourself and let your nerves provide that last, extra boost of energy.

I'm excited to hear about your race!

Stacie

Message: I heard this quote from a World Record miler. If I got to the starting line and I wasn't nervous then it is time to retire because I know it isn't fun anymore.

Basically you will always get nervous before big events there really isn't much you can do except trust your training and try not to go out too hard!

Message: Shelly, by now you have already done your race - hope it went really well! As for the nerves ever going away...let's hope not!

Whether it's a big race, big date, job interview, whatever, it is the nerves that make it that much more exciting, and that will keep you coming back for more!
