Discussion: when should I re-fuel? newbie.....

Subject: when should I re-fuel? newbie.....

Message: Hey everyone....

As far as refueling on race day....should I take the time to stop and eat/drink something? I have been ok in my brick training to just chug on without eating/drinking anything. I know that is bad. When is a good time to re-fuel during the race?

Message:

Dana,

Hydrate the days before the race and the morning of the race.
About 10 minutes before the race start take a packet of gel.
On the bike have a Gu flask ( they hold about 5 packets of gel) and hit it a few times while riding followed by some water.

On the run just water for a sprint race.

this works for me.
Ron

Message: Depends on the distance. First of all, make sure you eat a good breakfast a couple hours prior to the race. For a sprint usually a GU before the swim. Water on the bike and run should get you home. An oly you may want to include another GU on the bike with one bottle water and one with electrolites ( I usually fill each only half way). Carry an extra GU or 2 on the run in case you need it.
If you're going long (half IM or full) then you'll need to experiment on your training days to see what will work for you.

Message: Ron is so right. I have been training with a gu pack (chocolate) before the bike and one (lime sublime) before the run, and I have never felt better. i used to have a bar before the race and I would always have a tummy ache or feel the dredded urgency to go... before the race was over. Now my tummy is content adn I am not wasted at the end.

Good luck!
Teresa

Message: I agree with Ron. For a sprint it is very minimal. I take a gel before the swim, during the bike gel and cytomax and maybe a drink at the aid stations during the run.

Most of all have fun.
