Discussion: tri early morning prep

Subject: tri early morning prep

Message: Does anyone have any tips for preparing yourself for a 6am tri? This is my first and transition opens at 5am. How do I get my body ready two hours earlier than I do on a regular basis? Do I wake up early all week in preparation to get my body clock used to it? I am a morning person, so I'm hoping this will go well. My first tri is July 9.

Message: Sherri,
the usual protoco is to eat or have breakfast 2 hours prior to getting to the race site.
When I did my 1/2 IM, my friend's wave started at 6:30am and she had to be there extra early.
We woke up at 4:00am and had breakfast (I had coffee and a bagel) then we headed out at 5:00am.
The idea about eataing and drinking ahead is so that you can get to the bathroom before the swim start....

Message: I would get up early the week before Sherri. I'm usally up at 3:30-4:00 on race day. HAVING PACKED THE NIGHT BEFORE!!!!! The bathroom BEFORE the race is a good thing too. Get to transition as early as possible. You get to walk around and chat, and stretch, and logistically plan your transitions too. For me, hanging out early is just part of the whole experience, plus I'm a control freak, and I have to be everywhere early anyway...Airport, Dinner parties, everywhere. That's another issue for the Therapist as well.

Message: I like to be the first to the race course and I am not normally an early morning person.
I get the eating done early.
I have time to hit the porta johns.
I have time to become fully awake so that I do things correctly
I have time to deal with any problems ( one time I had to change a tire before the race)
I have time to really loosen up.

As far as practicing getting up early or not. I have tried both and believe it is best to make sure to get plenty of sleep for several days before the race even if I have to sleep in.

Message: I find that when I know I need to be up extra early for something important, my body cooperates. I think getting up at the normal time and ensuring, like Ron said, plenty of sleep the week before is your best bet. Your body may not adjust to that new schedule in just one week and may leave you feeling even more tired.

Just remember, the "night before the night" is the most important night of sleep : ) (i.e. Friday night for a Sunday race, etc.)
