Message: I do well at swimming and running. I have done terrible at the biking. What's the best way to get improvement on the biking? Anything will help.

Thanks.

Message: Probably doing some tempo training...I have a triathlon coach and she has us doing tempos on our longer rides...so if you have a 2 hour ride you would warm up for an hour and then do 3-4x5 min tempos where you ride a little faster getting your HR up but not too high and then do a 3 min recovery...followed by a cool down for the rest of the ride...hope that helps...

Message: Jon,
I've found riding in groups has helped me increase my speed and hill climbing. When you ride with accomplished cyclists you learn so much from them. Many are more than willing to help you achieve whatever goal you may have whether that be climbing a hill faster or picking up your pace on a flat. Your local bike shop should have organized rides or know of people who you could ride with.

Message: I have to agee with Becky, join a local bike group and get out and ride with them. Our group has various levels to choose from (A, B,C) and has rides every weekend to choose from. You can start out slow with the C group and see how you do. We have very hilly terrain around here, and some rides will stress hills that make for some great training. And most in the group are more than willing to give advice on riding. It also makes for some great social events!!

Message: I hate to admit this.....but spin classes at the local Y twice a week really did help me get better on the bike. I was able to work on higher RPMs and strength training via "hill work" on the spin bike. And I actually just bought my own spin bike for home so I can get in my weekday bike workouts during the odd hours after my kids are in bed (not a morning person)...I prefer to get in some of my rides between 9 and 11pm.....weird I guess.

Message: I agree with all the advice given -In a nut shell here is the basic advice that was given to me about a year and half ago. You need time on the bike - period! Funny! in how simple it sounds - but it is very true. It can include everything above, spin classes, group rides, solo rides, a stationary trainer, and commuting to work.

I find that the more time that I have spent riding the better I got (and I still have great deal to improve) - it just takes time.

so do as many things as you can on the bike - IMO there are not "junk miles" on a bike

just my 2cents

Message: At last years IM Canada I had a 30 minute lead after the bike. The thing that I feel made this possible is that I spend a lot of time on my technique. I bike on my comp-u-trainer once a week so that I can monitor my bio-scan. I also ride on rollers and I do one-leg drills. You still need to do hill repeats and other strengthening drills but good biomechanics is very important.

Message: Lots of miles on the bike. Work on your spin and technique!! I was an ok biker my first 2 years then one year I was a little injurred and couldn't run much so I biked all day long and everywhere. I ended up getting 12,500+ miles in from Feb thru end of Nov. Ever since then I haven't had to worry about the bike section. Being able to get long days in the saddle and even pushing thru the point where you bonk will pay huge dividends in the long term. Biking is the one aspect of tri's where junk miles actually pay off!
