Discussion: What are the clothing options?

Subject: What are the clothing options?

Message: Instead of buying dedicated tri shorts has anybody found success with other gear?
I only have a pair of bike shorts and I heard that it is not advisable to wear to swim in because they will not dry.
Is a thicker pair of spandex okay to wear?

Message: Practice brick workouts with your spandex shorts. If your clothing works in the pool and then on the bike transition then why not? Make sure you are comfortable and not chafed. If you can hop off the bike and jog in the shorts then why not? I bought a fancy run shirt and tried it out in the pool and it created so much drag in the pool I just bought a tri shirt from TYR. I use tri-shorts and they work great in all 3 sports. Just don't try new gear on race day. Big mistake. Best wishes.

Message: Tri-Shorts are great for the the sprint tri's. They have some padding for the bike leg but not an excessive amount for you to still run in for a few miles.

I use my tri-shorts for swim training, sub 25 mile bike training routes, and 5k training runs. Also have used them with much satisfaction on swim/bike brick workouts.

I am a bit 'susceptible' to that annoying chub rub so my concern was a lack of padding. Works great for me on sprint distance workouts.

Message: What Sherri said is what I was going to say -- don't ever try anything new, including clothes, on a race day.

Tri-shorts are my pick as well -- they dry really quickly (unless you're biking in the pouring rain - but we don't need to go over that again!) and have no drag in the water. Regular spandex might loosen up on you, if it's that thin stuff, which can trap water or air inside and make a nice sail behind you in the water.

Best of luck to you.

Message: Geoff,

At this evenings swim workout I spoke with the young man that won the pro division of our sprint race this weekend, he did the entire race in a speedo. ( he's young and has the body for it) and I'm sure he has a lot of time in the bike saddle to toughen up.

I like the tri shorts better than regular bike shorts even on long rides they are cut straighter are less restrictive and I don't want an excessive amount of wet padding interfering with things.

Ron
