Message: I've got a question for you guys. I am going to follow the beginner sprint program on this site and since my event is on Aug. 28, training begins at the end of this month. That's all well and good, aside from the fact that my gym's pool doesn't open up until June.

Do you think skipping the first month (swimming portion only) will hurt me too terribly much? I have no experience swimming competitively, but I am comfortable in the water. Perhaps substituting weight training for my swimming days that first month to build upper body strength would be a good idea?

Thanks in advance for your support! Will check back in tomorrow morning.

Message: I have done 3 sprint tri's and am a comfortable swimmer. What you recommend sounds like it'll work. I would get some books and look for some swimming specific strength training exercises to begin with. A book that I have not yet looked at, but has been recommended to me is called "Total Immersion". It's a method of swim technique coaching used by our Master's swim program which is coached by an Ironman triathlete. You may also find some land drills to do to work on coordination and timing. If you start swimming in June, you'll have 3 solid months of swimming. That should do it! Meanwhile, if you find a pool before then, you can try out some of the techniques you've read about. Best of luck!!!

Message: theres no substitute to actually swimming in the water.(easy for me to say because i am completely surrounded by water and have good weather year round in Hawai'i, but besides that) the land drills would help out strength wise but for overall comfort and confidence getting in the water is best. although you do have three months afterward, and that can be a lot of time to get things done. i believe it will work out great for you.

Message: Thanks for the responses!

I have heard of "Total Immersion" and will most likely end up buying it the next time I am in a bookstore.

I have never heard of land drills, though. Looks like I have some Googling to do.

Message: Another tip would be to go swim in the area high school natitorium or lake. Also practice your techinques of strokes and be consistant don't pick up bad habbits. Because swimming in the pool is totally different than swimming in the ocean bay or lake, so u'll need strengthen your upper body w/upper body machines even though you do NOT swim that month.

Message: I did my first sprint last year and I had a hard time being able to get to the water to swim as well. Although there is no substitute for swimming- I found that mimicking the swimming motion with 2-5 lb dumbbells on an incline bench (face up) gets your muscles used to the motion. Swimming in the pool is a lot different than fresh water- I almost died, so make sure you get in what ever water you are going to swim in a couple of times! Good Luck!

Message: I suppose I should have updated this post. First of all the swim portion of my event is not open water, so I (thankfully) don't have to tackle that beast until next year. Secondly, I got in touch with another Y roughly 45 minutes away and my membership "benefits" (not sure how to word this) are good there.

So long story short, I have a pool to use for the next month until mine opens up -- it's just a little out of the way. But hey, it's only a month.

Thanks anyways to everyone who replied!

Message: Get in the pool, nothing substitutes for time in the water. On race day, you will be glad you did when the bodies are thrashing around you.

Message: I looked at the Total Immersion website mentioned in this thread, watched the free videos there, and bought the book last weekend. I had the most amazing swim week ever: I haven't gained any speed, but my strokes (both breaststroke and freestyle) have become much more efficient. Today, instead of struggling to finish the workout, I swam about 400 extra yards and only left the pool because my family was expecting me home to cook dinner. An amazing program.

Message: Total buy the total immersion book. THIS is a great guide to swimming. I was training my boyfriend but it really took Total Immersion book by Terri to answer all his extra swimming techniques. I've been swimming for over 5 years and it is hard for me to explain the "Correct" swimming techniques. If you can not buy the book then go to the nearest library. Good Luck and don't give up. once u start swimming u won't want to stop.

Message: Man, you're screwed. Naw, no worries. Like Andy above intimates though, the sooner you get in the water and practice swimming with some friends the better. Try cramming 5 of your buddies in the same lane and swimming next to each other, right behind each other, over each other, etc. The first minute of your first tri will go much easier if you are used to the chaos that goes with the swim start.

Message: there is man ways you can still prcatice swimming. For instance you can get a bench and try to practice your stroking and possibly find an indoor swimming pool they are usually open all year round.
