Message: I am into week 3 of my 1/2 IM program and literally do all the technique work outs. When running I am watching the Evolutionary running DVD and doing the exercises in my lounge room ( do this with socks on and a mat or the partner will kill you if they see you dragging your runners on the carpet) and I have been doing the whole Total Immersion thing for my swimming, trying to find balance and practicing the drills. I have just been logging these as per the programe but I have just realised it counts towards your total avg in each event.

Do people care? It is hard to show an opion about something when you know people will be looking at your monthly work out and see how little distance or pace you are doing.

Message: I use it just to keep track for myself. The same happens to me, so my log numbers aren't totally represesntative of my times either. The only time I can think of when it might matter is when some one is looking for a training buddy and checks your stats to see if you are in their pace range...if that matters to you, you could note your actual R/B/S pace averages somewhere in your profile.
The other thing to do is to log those drills under "other" and put in a description. Then they won't mess with your R/B/S records, I don't think...

Message: I second Maggie's statement. I used to write all my workouts down, and I just like doing it this way better. As far as anyone else seeing, everyone's average pace should be a little slower than they actually run, unless they never do recovery runs or are lying.

I don't think too many people are super-concerned with comparing themselves to others because we're all training for different races, we all have different goals, and we all have different levels of experience. My theory is: Do whatever will make you faster and log it all on ontri for your own reference, even if it doesn't help your averages.

The log is yours. Use it to keep track of your training in a way that make sense to you.

I like to make notes about the work outs just in case I develop a problem and want to go back and see what brought it on, but in reality I rarely look back.

Message: I second Ron on the log. It's like taking notes back in college. Took lot's of them but rarely went back to read them, only for reference. Just the act of logging workouts and taking notes keeps you well aware of your progress.

I'm sure one I really get into consistent training and a buddy or two, we will be a bit more competitive with our distances or speeds.

Message: Jamie, I log my workouts as a confidence booster. Right before the race I look back at how much I trained and use that to motivate me. I also use it during the race to get me to go faster!!!. Use it for whatever you want it is yours to make the most use out of. It is what you think of yourself that matters, not what other people think. The strength comes from the inner person, and what you do. No matter what people think of you it is what you think of yourself and your training that will get you through the tri. Sure, people can temporarily get you going at a low point in a race but it is up to you for the long haul.

Keep going.

Message: Yeah it'll show you slower but you're the only one who looks at it or should even care. if someone does check out your profile and see your times, they might not even concider you a threat at the next race. Then you can blow them away at the event ;-)

Message: I agree with everyone - log what you do, give yourself credit for your work. I use the log to inspire me to get on with my workouts. The only log I peek at is my sisters - gotta have that friendly sister to sister competion thing ya know...!

Message: I'm numbers anal, and struggled with what you're talking about when I first got on the site in March.
Thing is, though, if you really hone on technique, you may not go as far or as fast. If you work on endurance, you slow down to reach greater distances. If you are working on speed, you have to drop your distance to maximize speed.
Your numbers are useful to show what you've done and how far you've come (as Amy and Tim said), or to show trends in your training. I think you should keep logging them as you have. You're getting faster and healthier, and that's what this is really all about.

Message: Cheers to everyone and thank you. I use it as a motivation tool, not a whipping post. Since being on ontri I have stuck to my plans and learnt to accept my pace as MY PACE. Thank you again.
