Discussion: A 2.7 mile "5K"??

Subject: A 2.7 mile "5K"??

Message: Guys, I'm confused. Why aren't all srint Tri's the same distances? Isn't it kind of hard to compare your results between races when they're all different? I'm getting the idea that a "sprint tri" is a loose term which is open for interpretation.

The race I'm doing this Sunday was supposed to be .75 Mile swim, 12 mile bike, and a 5K run. Then we just got an email yesterday that the city changed the course on us and now the bike is "about 13 miles" and "about 2.7" miles. Not a big change I admit, but I have never heard of this happening on a foot race. I'm having trouble figuring out what a "real" sprint tri is.

This is a USAT sanctioned event, so it seems to me that there should be some standards. Is this normal??

Message: Hey Carrie
Sprint is the "loosest" defined distance, I've been in 5 different Sprints and not one has been the same. I base my results on my Split times. That's about the only way I know how to work it.
Good Luck!
Let us know how you do
A.

Message: Crazy eh? All 3 of mine are different too... think the consistency starts at the Olympic level! BTW Carie, did my own tri this am (the same length as what I will be doing in Philly next weekend) and I am still alive! Actually, it wasn't too bad. Granted, I wasn't in open water and noone was kicking me in the face, nonetheless...

Message: It is impossible to judge on distance race from the next. It has been my experience over the years that race directors are not vey good at measuring distaces and few if any are actually the distance advertised. That is why I strongly recommend checking the courses ahead of the race so you know exactly how far you have to go and are not surpirsed by courses longer or shorter than expected. Andy

Message: Great job Timarie!! You are so ready for this!! You're gonna tear it up when you get out there next weekend. Can't wait to hear the race report!

Thanks for the info Andy. I think I'm going to try using that website "mapmyrun.com" or google earth that was posted a week or so ago and see how close I can get it.

Thanks for the info, I guess this is just "industry standard" to be inconsistent.

Message: The "sprint" is a loose term. The longer races are usually more standardized but like Andy said, not all that accurate.

You can't really compare one race to the next there are far too many variables (terrain weather etc.)

The thing is that everyone in any given race does the same course on the same day so they are the only ones you can compare yourself to.
