Message: Well as I said before on my first open water swim I kind of bonked or whatever, was unsure of myself and did not go to far. Tonight we met at the lake (14 members of our club) I did a slow swim across the lake and then back to shore. We then just swam in and out for a while. The last trip was approx 400 metres, once around the course. I was slow, felt real good about the swim. Met a goal I quess, I shall continue to go to the lake and swim at every opportunity. always with someone else of course. It sure felt good.
Apparently the club is going to instate a buddy swim program in the fall. Basically have each memebers swimming assessed by the coach and then pairing the poorer swimmers with the good swimmers. Sounds like an excellent idea to me. Cant wait.

Message: Nothing like getting back on that horse, right? Impressed with your fortitude. Have never done an open swim before and doing one this weekend in the Chesapeake Bay, so I'll have to remember your positive thoughts during my swim. Kudos!

Message: Hey Timarie -- I'll trade you your blue crabs for the alligators, snakes, and ... now I just found out we also have dangerous amoeba in our lakes here in Central Florida as well. Makes you wanna jump right in, huh!

I had the unusual opportunity to chat via email w/ a USAT swim instructor the other day, as she is a friend of a friend -- and her advice to me for the open water swim was to focus on technique and think about making each stroke as long and perfect as possible. She said the number 1 killer during open water is to psyche yourself out - not being able to see, bodies all around, fear of the unknown etc. That was my experience for sure -- so those of you who can & do get out in the lake / ocean before your first race will have a big advantage over us that didn't.

Message: I have struggled with open water swimming for the past year, (1hour swim in my first 1/2 iron two weeks ago). I would go 50 meters and have to stop and get my breath and site. I was getting really frustrated and had to get over the anxiety. This week I went to the lake alone and and faced down my demons. I swam in the shallows for a hour and looked at the fish and logs on the bottom. I then headed across the lake, and what a difference! I had always swam with at least one other person and i think that was also affecting me. I would feel guilty for holding up faster swimmers and i would try and keep their pace. When they started to pull away i would get even more frustrated and this would create more anxiety. I went for my second solo swim today and was the only person at the lake ( I know it's not recomended but, desperate times call for desperate measures) and i had a great swim. I think i have finally put that monster to bed.
Just my two cents worth
