Message: I have my first tri coming up in two weeks, Phili Tri (I hope to see some of you there that I have heard talking about it!) I have been feeeling completely drained everyday for the last few weeks. I have been training for several months now and really only started feeling this way recently. My workouts lately have not been very intense and are in-frequent. I feel like I have been resting plenty but just can't seem to get back into the same energy level I had just a couple months ago. I keep taking 2-4 days off and seem to feel ok, but as soon as a do another workout I feel like I fall right back into that tired/drained feeling again. Has anyone ever experience this before? Any suggestions on what I should do? - Just want to add that this site is really great and I'm glad to be a part of it, I wish I had knowledge to share but I am just getting started!

Message: Is it possible that you might have a minor infection going on, sinus, ear, gums?

Message: Hi Ron,
I feel healthly other than being tired all the time.
Body aches have definately increased too, my bones and muscles in my legs are almost always at least a little sore. I have read it is most likely just over training but I am afraid if I just start resting I am going to crash during the race.

Message: Geoff, It might be worth revisiting your training regimen AFTER your Philly race...eating and sleeping habits, other possible stresses of late. Are your workouts just infrequent or are they infrequent and inconsistent? Rest is great, of course, and is it possible you have been pushing yourself a little hard lately on the days you are working out? Have your workouts changed recently?
For Philly, you likely won't do yourself harm by cutting back now. Just as our systems need a good night's rest, our muscles need some pre-race rest as well.
Good luck - no doubt you'll find success in Philly!

Message: Geogg,

I frequently take breaks of 4 or 5 days at a time (usually work related) and still do just fine with triathlon. I am one of the laziest competetive triathletes that I know. We need to let our bodies heal as we develop new muscle. Over training is rampet in this sport.

Still if you really take 4 days off I would think you would come back ready to go, so there is likely another problem. Are you eating a lot of fatty foods? or perhaps something that you have a mild allergy to such as peanut butter or milk?

I used to practically live on peanut butter but now realize that it really messes with me.

I hope you get it figured out soon,
let us know as someone else likely will have the same problem.
Ron

Message: Geoff,

It might be worth a trip to your doctor to rule out any medical reasons for your tired feeling. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in grassy or wooded areas, you might consider testing for Lyme disease (could explain the tired feeling and achiness....) My hubby had Lyme diseas a few years back. He felt awful for a long time, and finally went to the doctor after much pestering. He said as soon as he had the antibiotic, he felt better almost instantly.

There could be other medical causes to feeling tired as well, so IMHO, it would be worthwhile to rule those out. Of course, it could just be a simple case of over-training as well....

Good luck, hope you feel better soon!
Jenny

Message: Hate to cause worry, but I had that drained feeling turn into full blown mono, no symptoms except what I thought was a slight headcold. In a matter of days, I went from 1/2 IM ready to having to take a two hour nap for a walk to the mailbox. I'd get it checked out. It's no fun to lose expensive entry fees to illness.

Message: Thank you all for the responses!
Ron now that you mentioned it I have been eating a ton of peanut butter lately, although I do not think I am allergic? I guess I should probably look into that.
My training program is (at least was) pretty structured and I stated using one from this site.
Before I started training for this race I used to do a lot of cycling and mountain biking (almost everyday), I never felt tired from doing that though and I used to go pretty hard most of the time. I just hate to stop training altogether.
I have also noticed that even though I am really tired all the time, I have a hard time falling asleep.
Part of it might be diet, but I have quit eating/drinking everything I considered bad for you, i.e. soda, chips, candy, etc.

Message: Geoff,

I agree with Jenny and you should have a simple CBC done at your Doctor's office. It might as simple as iron deficiency, or the start of an infection. Better to have it checked out! Hope all is well and let us know your progress and race results!

Message: It's funny (OK, maybe it't not the exact word) but Ihave the same thing. I am going to see my physician tomorrow to see if he can figure out something. My symptoms are : extremely tired, pain in muscle and joint that will come and go, headache... I used to train a lot more and now it seems that no matter how long I rest, I am tired and achy !! I'll let you know what my physician thinks !

Message: This mid-season slump is something that most of us deal with. Many think it is related to overtraining, not enough sleep or not enough fuel. I have found that overtraining is real but if you are resting plenty and eating well I think there may be something else going on that i have dealt with. Do you train with anybody on a regular basis? I know for me that if I am stuck training alone that workout intensity and the desire to workout diminishes. We as triathletes are competitive and if we are alone all the time we get 'bored'.

Message: Thank you all for the insight. I slept about 10 hours last night and even though I woke up tired I feel much better. I also went and got some vitamin C and E and took some of that and it seemed to help. This might be a little off the wall but I think some of it might have to do with flouresent (Sp) lighting and staring at a computer screen all day???? I don't know if anyone else ever experienced that? Regardless, I just hate not being able to go out and train I feel so lazy if I don't. I pretty much train alone all the time and I don't really get bored by myself in fact sometimes I prefer it, I just would like to know what it feels like to train without acy bones and sore muscles!!!
